Lucille says she has a little brother big sister relationship with Kidd Cole, music producer, who works with Kanye West. One day, his manager, Miguel, calls to invite her to his birthday party as a special guest so they can meet. YAY! The assistant asked her to help make some calls for an upcoming project and she worked for him for two weeks setting up security and drivers. She PAID FOR THING UPFRONT! Because, idiot. So this is a weird one. There is no romance involved at all Lucille was scammed online and she wants to catch the bad guy. Lucille is mad!
Neve and Max call Allison to see how artists get listed on the MTV website’s artist page because Kidd Cole is listed there. She says it’s pretty easy for people to add themselves. She has never heard of Kidd Cole. Kidd says he is signed with G.O.O.D. music. Allison says she can make a call to confirm that. It’s interesting that the blur the face of Kanye West in a photo that is supposed to be Kidd and Kanye hanging out. When the guys do some investigating the determine that Miguel and Kidd Cole are the same person. They also find a Facebook site about Kidd Cole being a scam artist! (That is clearly where production found the story, contacted him first and then Lucille just played along like she called them, because why would anyone think to call Catfish about an Internet scam?) They contact the girl who made the page.
The boys and Lucille go to D.C. to meet with Loretta, who is a limo driver scammed by Kidd. She has met him in person so they will be able to identify who Kidd really is. On the drive down, Allison confirms that G.O.O.D. has never heard of Kidd Cole. Loretta always dropped Kidd off at what looks like some projects. Shouldn’t that have been a red flag? After she realized she was scammed, she went to the apartment which turned out to be his grandmother’s place. He was not there but the mother and grandmother were. The mother would not even come out to speak to her, but the grandmother eventually admitted that Kidd and his mama had been staying there for two months because they are homeless. Loretta is a great detective and is stealing the show! Kidd has an arrest record for fraud. Apparently, as Apollo would say, he is “a thief of that essence.”
The boys and Lucille arrange for a meetup. The kid (who has obviously signed a release and was wearing a mike) seems nervous. Lucille is acting like she just wanted to meet the famous Kidd Cole. However, when Neve called him on the phone, he called him by his real name, Jerez. Anyway, they lead him down the garden path asking about his upcoming projects. Kidd says he has been in the studio working with a couple of people. He is having trouble thinking on his feet and answering the questions. He says all his beats are copyrighted and he is completely legit. Jerez suddenly gets really busy on his phone. By the way, they are at a pier, and I keep thinking this kid is gonna jump. Many of his texts with Lucille were suicidal. This is getting creepy. Neve admires the case for Jerez’s phone and asks to see it, Jerez lets him. Neve throws the phone in the water! Neve confronts him, hard! Neve is pissed.
The producers step in and apologize for Neve and tell Jerez they will get him a new phone. The producers pull Neve away to try to calm him down. Meanwhile, Lucille takes a turn at Jerez using a quieter approach. Jerez takes off his mike and gives it to the producer and says he is done. Neve apologizes to the guy for throwing his phone into the water. Jerez says he has a session tomorrow, so to shut them up, he will invite them to that.
The next day the go to a house where Jerez is supposed to be recording. When they get there, there is a note on the door that says, “come in, we are downstairs in the studio.” They all head downstairs but this whole episode is making me nervous. Downstairs is a decent studio and Jerez is there with Hadi, the sound engineer who lives there with his parents in the basement, as all professional sound engineers do. So far, everything seems legit!
The two professional musicians play a track for the gang that is supposed to be Jerez, but it’s not it’s a famous group completely unrelated. Neve pretends that he wants to lay down a track. Neither tweedle dee nor tweedle dum have any idea how to work the equipment in whoever’s house they are in. It’s hysterical. Hadi basically bolts and then comes clean. He’s known Kidd for about a month and he asked him to find a studio for them to film in, he does not live there, he is not a sound engineer.
Neve and Max confront Kidd about his thieving ways. Neve gets a little heated and the producers call for a break. Kidd is outraged that he is being disrespected. Seriously, this fool could be Apollo’s little brother. They both have so many haters trying to damage their brands! During the break, Max has a gentle go at the guy, and has a bit of a break through with him.
It’s time for the therapy session by MTV. Jerez wipes away his tears with his long stiletto nails and everyone leaves. On the update, Lucille says she has changed her major to criminal justice. Kidd Cole refused to be interviewed and is currently claiming he is producing for Beyoncé. He continues to scam people in exactly the same manner. However, he is currently undergoing a mental evaluation to see if he is sane enough to stand trial in Virginia.
