So when the fifty millionth person asked me why I wasn’t watching Orphan Black, I decided to DVR the marathon. I am finally caught up and after a slow start, I am officially hooked. The show airs on Saturday night on BBC America so there really isn’t anything else on and you might as well watch it with us.
I don’t have a lot of time to review this because it’s Sunday and Easter and the RHOA avalanche begins tonight. Plus I will probably do Million Dollar Matchmaker since Nene is on it oh and WWHL I think has Phaedra tonight, but if I don’t do it now it may not get done so here is the short version.
Orphan Black is a Canoookian! science fiction (don’ worry I don’t like SciFi either, it’s really not all SciFiy) show about Sarah Manning, a grifter and minor con artist who sees someone who looks exactly like her throw herself in front of a train and die. She takes over her identity as Elizabeth Childs who was a police detective in order to clean out her bank accounts. She soon realizes she is a clone and so was Beth. Her many trials and tribulations lead her to encounter other clones. At the end of season one she is aware of nine clones.
Alison Hendrix, is my favorite clone. she is a stereotypical suburban soccer mom who provides a lot of much needed comedy in what is overall a pretty dark story. Another clone, Cosima Niehaus, a graduate student studying evolutionary developmental biology. Cosima is a very smart intellectual type who is a lesbian who may or may not be romantically involved with her monitor. The evil clone, Helena is a religious zealot and assassin Rachel who is a clone who appears to be working for the bad guys. That is if we could actually figure out who the bad guys are. There was a German clone who already got killed so I doubt she will be that important other than the fact that she was ill when she was murdered with some sort of respiratory infection and Cosima has the same thing. Actually there is a third infected clone that we haven’t met yet.
Felix is Sarah’s foster brother. He’s an artist who really makes his living as a gay male prostitute. Felix is to Sarah as Nolan is to Emily on Revenge. He is a loyal supportive brother who will do anything, including identifying dead bodies, for her. He is also an extremely entertaining character. When Allison gushes to Felix that she is doing a musical, he drolly replies “I hope it’s not Cats.” It’s Cats. And Allison’s rehearsal scenes are hysterical.
Tatiana Maslany is brilliant and the entire series is like her one woman show with lots of supporting characters. She plays so many different parts and then, she also plays one clone pretending to be another. It’s all pretty amazing.
So take a look and see if this is something you would be interested in. Let me know if I should blog it or not…
