We have all been looking forward to seeing Jodi Arias lumber back into the courtroom in her leg irons, pink socks and prison stripes, but if Nurmi and Wilmot have their way, that will NOT be happening. According to abc15.com, on Thursday lawyers for Arias filed a motion with the court asking Judge Sherry Stephens to disallow media from the courtroom for the entirety of the trial! /GASP! If they are unsuccessful at getting the media thrown out of the courtroom, they are asking that none of the footage be aired for the public until after the trial.
The defense team’s rationale for this appears to hinge on the backlash received by some of the defense witnesses from the original trial. Remember Alyce LaViolette? And Patricia Womack? It seems that they do not wish to participate due to public threats made against them after their prior appearances.
This seems to me to be a bit like trying to get the toothpaste back in the tube. What’s done is done and even if the camera’s were not permitted, the courtroom would still be packed with media reporting on the days events.
It’s been a bizarre intermission between the two sentencing trials so far. Just last month David Lee Simpson was arrested for making death threats against Nancy Grace and Jane Valez Mitchell. Simpson apparently quit his job in NY to “head down south” after tweeting that wanted to tie them to a tree, leave them out all night to suffer and slit their throats.
Also, Nurmi and Wilmott are asking that the juror questionnaire include questions asking the jurors to list their social media accounts after finding out AFTER the last trial that Juror #17, an alternate was tweeting with the news media during the trial. No word on whether Jodi herself will still be allowed to tweet during this sentencing phase.
I’m not sure what to expect on Monday, if we end up being able to see anything at all. It would not surprise me for both defense attorneys to once again ask to be released from the case, or ask for more time to prepare, or ask for special lunches for our little murderess. I suppose we have the weekend to wait and see.
