New NBC Show: Siberia (Review)

July 1, 2013 by tamaratattles 30 Comments

siberiaRemember when I told you guys to watch Siberia tonight on NBC at 10pm? Well, I sure hope you did because IT WAS FANTASTIC. I am not going to recap this show because I cannot take my eyes off the screen for a minute when it is on. SIBERIA kept me on the edge of my seat with my eyes riveted to the TV the entire hour. Commercials were hell. It’s Survivor on Steroids. Sixteen people compete to survive a winter in Siberia with nothing but the clothes on their back and a very minimalistic camp. In the first episode, the group is cut to 14. The last two to arrive at the camp town are taken home. After that the only rule is once you cross the line exiting Siberia to push the button seek help and/or give up, you are out. Whoever survives the winter and makes it the full 90 days divide the $500,000 prize. No rules. No voting off. No help. No food supplied. Just 14 people in a social experiment to survive in the wilderness.

Obviously it is a scripted show, and we know a lot about editing these days. But the editing is somehow still surprising. Mesmerizing even. They leave a lot of things hanging. There characters are many of the Survivor/Big Brother casting types. The asshole, the model, the older man are all there. But this is a global game so there is the Icelandic blond girl in pony tails. The guy from Montenegro.

How did the one girl arrive first? What was the deal with Johnny and the berries? Why did they eat them? How did the punk-haired younger girl who seems terrified even get on the show? What is in the shed? What the hell is really going on here? And next week’s episode teaser? Um wow! SET YOUR DVRs and we can meet here to talk about it after each episode. I LOVE THIS SHOW and plan to watch this episode again.

P.S. Kyle Richards is going to be green with envy over Joyce’s hair. It’s fabulous.

I doubt it. You might catch it on nbc.com In fact I think I read the first episode was out on the net before the show. Check nbc,com

And thanks Tamara. I missed your post on this one. Very excited now that you have given such a rave review. P.S. Are Newlyweds first year or Long Island Princesses really worth watching? I opted not to watch those and am wondering if I should bother if they happen to air a marathon one of these days.

If you are hoping for a Bravo marathon you might not get Newlyweds. Maybe on Style since they are done. Long Island Princesses is…well check it out and see. I plan to watch it all because… it’s just so odd to me. I don’t know many Jewish people.

Than you Tamara, I was wanting to watch this and totally forgot. I’ll set my DVR and also watch the first episode. I bet the one actress who is on RHOBH is making Kyle jelly.

This thread has gotten a little old, but you can also catch Siberia on Hulu free…at least this first episode is free. Hulu is tricky like that though so don’t count on them (necessarily) for a free episode 2.

It’s also on-demand. I watching now. Thanks Tamera for reviewing this show, I had never heard of it. I don’t know how because I am a TV junkie! So much to watch, so little time! Now I’m distracted from watching what I had planned to watch. Oh well, all is well as long as it’s good TV!

I happened to see this last night and I though it was great summer TV. I love the crazy shows we get during the summer, “Murder In Small Town X” anyone?

It seems just like MISTX to me, so very scripted and everyone seems like they could be a plant. I’m not even sure it’s Reality TV at all but I’m loving it.

It’s not reality TV. It’s a scripted show with actors, one of which is the new RHOBH, the one who on the show is from Columbia and has long dark hair. It’s kind of spoofy of Survivor but more of a what if????

I LOVED IT. Did I mention that?

Oh good, I thought for sure they must be actors but wasn’t positive.

It looked like they’re going to have a super natural element with the camp being abandoned a hundred or so years ago. What do you think?

yeah maybe… it’s probably not going to go all “Lost” but it is sort of like that I think.

I forgot about it but am set for Friday night. Sounds great!
Is anyone watching ‘The Dome’ and ‘The Crossing’?
Steven Spielberg has a hand in The Dome production, enough said!
The Crossing is also great. International spies tracking down whoever needs to be taken down.
Sounds like we have 3 great news shows to watch this season.
And, even with all the hype, I could not stay awake during that new show ‘Ray Donovan’. Drama, mystery, comedy, etc. what does it what to be when it grows up?

I saw a preview show, not sure if it is the same from last night. I taped it. There are now THREE shows on Mondays at 10 I watch, SIBERIA, Mistresses (hush guilty pleasure) and now Below Deck. I tape a later showing of BD.

I am such an idiot. I thought this was real.
First I will say I watched this days after the premiere, and I have never heard of this show until I saw it blogged about here. I did not read TT’s blog, but I could tell she loved it. Not until the end did I think this can’t be real. However, I love this show. It had me riveted, and my thinking it was authentic proved to me how saturated my brain is with reality tv.

Don’t feel bad, UF. I think the lack of a lot of advance advertising was so that people flipping around would assume it was real for the firs episode and get sucked in. I only knew about it because Joyce is on RHOBH next season and I follow her. AND SHE RETWEETED ME YESTERDAY! Woot!

I LOVED it!! How did that girl get there before everyone else? I didn’t even see her running. It feels like a scripted cross between Lost and Survivor. I can’t wait for next week!

Thanks TT. Watched this after saw your review here. Will definetely be watching the next one. That Sabina chick is creepy. How did she see the camera man in the woods when she wasn’t in the mushroom party? Why is she the only one to not have any side interviews and is only in group shots?

YAY. I am glad to be making converts. I too have lots of questions. I hope we start getting some answers. I expect someone to die every episode. I reckon Johnny will win. 🙂

PS Everytime I pick a pony in a reality show they go out first, so I am terrible at guessing the winner.

Thanks. I figured that out right after I posted that but my follow up comment didn’t post for some reason. My dvr had it as a new episode and I was all excited after the way the first episode left us off. Womp.
