Horrorific Tornado Levels Schools and Homes for Miles in Oklahoma City

May 20, 2013 by tamaratattles 41 Comments

tornadoThe news is all over CNN and it is BAD. I don’t know why I am watching this because it is horrible for my anxiety. I know many of you are watching so here is a place to talk about the horrors on the TV. At least two schools are totally obliterated as are dozens of homes.  There are still active tornado warnings at this time. I hope all of you are safe.

The bad thing about OK is no basements. Fifteen minutes notice helps but this is going to classified F-5. Awful. I have friends that lost their house & their dogs are missing, realize that seems petty with death. I pray for all of those killed, injured, lost homes & pets.

No losses in these circumstances is petty, Diane. I can’t imagine losing a home, a pet, a photograph, a garden blossom… I’m so sorry this is happening & hope the best for your friends. To imagine, as we speak, people enduring staggering loss, challenge, anxiety… absolutely terrible. Our hearts & attention go out.

I hate tornadoes. They freak me out.
They are the most scary weather phenomenon.
I live in a hurricane zone in TX & the hurricanes don’t scare me. But I am terrified of the tornadoes/twisters from hurricanes.
After last week destructive tornadoes, I wish I had a basement/storm cellar.
Prayers & miracles to all affected today….

More than frightening. I can’t imagine! And no basements in the area as all rock. Makes one feel gratitude & sending prayers.

OMG the newscaster at Plaza Elementary is sobbing so much he can’t report. Talking about pulling third graders out of the school. The report who is sobbing is an emmy award winning journalist and he says it is the most horrific thing he has ever seen.

Isabella, I’ve heard that cell phone is limited to text only in that area. Try to stay calm. New reports show the news is good for the school children. So try to keep positive. It may be a bit before she can contact you. Let us know when she does. Sending positive thoughts your way.

Yes, we cannot reach them, assuming it is due to storms and nothing more. Very scary but just praying.

Praying for anybody out there that has family and loved ones in the path of this horrific tornado. I hope you hear from your loved ones soon and that they are safe. Sending prayers to all those affected in anyway by this tornado that they be safe and that the area recovers. God’s blessings on all.

Tamara, thank you for starting this thread for Oklahoma. I pray Isabella is able to connect with her family in Moore. It took us a while to locate our family that lives there. Probably because lots of cell towers are down. The last family member contacted us by Text a few minutes ago. She was in the high school that was hit in Moore. Thankfully she is fine. Isabella, my prayers are with you and your family.

glad to hear you heard from your family Donna. I am now hearing that the third graders at Plaza Towers are presumed dead. As a former teacher, I have been in tornado drills and tornado events with elementary kids, and I can’t get the pictures of those times out of my head tonight. Thankfully none of our schools were ever hit.

It looked like the inner walls had held. So very sorry to read this. As TT says, we practice for this event, children kneel down and face the wall and cover their heads with their hands. I guess that’s just not much protection from 200 mph winds. God bless and keep them all.

Yes Tamara, they just announced that they found 7 little ones drowned in the bottom of the school. Another 20 some are missing from that same school. I just heard the news and it took me to my knees whaling with grief. You being a former teacher and going through those drills, I’m sure this hits your heart in painful way also. How do the families ever recover from something like this. It’s beyond anything I can comprehend.

Most people in the Dallas area do not have basements. Basements are not standard option for houses. There are some that build cellarsI think Kansas City may have basements. Dallas has a lot of clay soil and limestone.

Isabella J. ~ Thank god your family is OK. Looking at the devastation since 5am this morning… OMG… Looks like a nuclear bomb went off. These super cells aren’t natural. They’re reporting recoveries (children) as I type. Much thought to all of these poor souls !! Wish my GSD was a rescue dog – I’d be there in a heartbeat.
