Jodi Arias Trial Discussion For Tuesday: Return of the Chosen Juan

April 16, 2013 by tamaratattles 192 Comments

jodialiceexpressionsWell we didn’t get much on Monday but we did get a little temper tantrum from Nurmi. I actually liked Nurmi in the beginning. I know he is up Shits Creek without a paddle and really wanted off this case long ago, but he needs to man up and quit acting like the fat little sister of the prom queen. It’s unbecoming. I don’t share in the vitriol y’all have for defense lawyers. I have a lot of respect for them in general. I can’t think of a much of a worse defendant to be dealt than Jodi. I think part of the Jodi and Willmott interaction that y’all don’t like is Willmott keeping Jodi under control. Making her feel heard so she stays calm at the table. As annoying as all the mistrial motions are, that’s the job of the defense. It’s also Jodi’s right under the law. From our perspective, we need to ensure all the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed for the inevitable appeal.

As seen on a Sussex Directories Inc siteAfter getting it wrong yesterday regarding what to expect, I shouldn’t tell you what I think about today, but I will anyway. I expect the defense to rest without calling any other witnesses. They got what they wanted in from Bryan and I think they are done. Martinez has 15 rebuttal witness on his list. He can call one or all 15. He has one psychologist, Dr. Janeen Demarte, on the list that I expect he will call early on to debunk Samuels and LaViolette. She had done a full psych report on Jodi. She is young and has shiny newish credentials and training and is practicing with a full client roster. The interesting thing about this witness is that in February her house was burglarized and her laptop with a psychological profile of Jodi Arias on it was taken. Lots of speculation about that….

I am worn out and emotionally frayed by the Boston Bombing so that is all I have for today. Thoughts are with all of y’all affected by the tragedy. As always, we will try to provide up dates as much as possible here for those who can’t watch at work. Welcome to all the new readers once again. Sorry if I made anyone other than the people I replied to directly feel uncomfortable about posting. I try not to do much comment regulation, but sometimes it is necessary to meet disrespect with unkindness to show it won’t be tolerated. On a happier note, all reasonable comments are welcome and appreciated. Happy trial watching! ~tt

I just finished watching what happened in court today via YouTube. I actually felt a little bit sorry for Nurmi. He has nothing to hang his hat on but he is trying. He was snarky, though, calling Martinez a ‘star’, saying he was playing the shell game when Martinez mentioned Ariar’s tweeting and saying something like ‘this is not second grade’. I did laugh when he said Martinez had a ‘pattern’ of intimidation and bullying. Guess Nurmi took a page out of MLV book, so to speak! MLV would be so proud!

Has anyone looked at the bathroom sink reflection? It is a photo that Jodi took. You can see her hand clearly on the right side of the sink with a rag or something…but she is cleaning. Due to todays eye trial..I looked at that picture again and maximized my screen. You can clearly make out ITS reflection. She is reflected straight on in the sink reflection and if you look closely next to that reflection you can see her arm out cleaning the sink. If you ever look at your reflection in the sink..you will notice it shows your reflection 2 ways..straight on and a side picture..due to the curvature. I really believe it is her and it gave me the creeps. I know nancy grace brought this up and she said it was a police photo. This is not the one with the ruler in it…and I just rewatched Juan and he stated it was from her camera. I will try and post the link to different pictures of the sink..and you can tell it is not an evidence photo.

Has anyone noticed that there are two left hands on the sink??? The one on the left appears to be a man’s hand with the chewed thumb nail. The one on the right appears to be a woman’s hand holding something…Could it be the knife??

As much as I do not like Jodi or her defense council I have to say they are trying their best to represent her. And yes she has a right to everything they are doing for her. I just get upset that they are dragging Travis through the mud with their attempts to make him look like an abuser and someone who likes little boys. That part is disgusting.

I agree, that is when things took a turn for the worse. When Alcye presented her first week of testimony, I think we all understood she was explaining DV and the history. When Alyce the following week, started trashing Travis and displayed her extreme bias, that is when all the outrage started and people grew to also dislike the defense. There was just a sudden turn to public outrage the last week Alyce testified. I feel their strategy to attack the victim after he had already been slaughtered, is just too much for us to swallow and handle emotionally.

Jodi should have pleaded ‘guilty by reason of insanity’ as it would have been far easier to prove than the abuse defense. They would have spared the Alexander family the horror of the trial especially the attempted distruction of Travis. She is a psychopath and no one could challenge that fact. Two or three expert witnesses and bang, you’re done. She would have avoided thee death penalty and who knows, she may even have had a chance of being freed after serving a decade or two. I’m always amazed at how people like Arias actually think that people believe the crap that flows from their mouths. Probably the telltale sign of a psychopath. I just want to get in that courtroom and yell out, ‘hey, you moron, NO ONE BELIEVES YOU and no one sympathizes with you.’ Oh well, I’ve vented, thank you.

She, Jodi, did actually offer to plead to 2nd degree. JM said no thank you. Afterwards, she sent another letter where she told JM that if he did not accept that plea, she would drag Travis’ name through the mud and also the Church of Latter Day Saints. In the letter she said all of this would be very painful for Travis’ family. Like she cares.

Rose, join me in the pleasure that I get each day at trial that all the artist, JA, gets to use are those little stub pencils. She has a child’s pencil top eraser and a child’s pencil sharpener that she is NOT allowed to use. All those beautiful pens and hi-lighters on the table and she is not allowed to touch them. Bet that just eats her up!

I read that she sold one of her scribbles from court for $880!! What kind of person buys her stuff do you think? And why would anyone want something from her? I find that creepy!!

I never understood people who buy stuff from famous murderers. To me it is just so creepy and filled with bad energy. And the fact that we have to have laws to keep murderers from profiting from their crime tells you there are a lot of people who will pay a lot of money for stuff from these people.

Apparently ebay has banned the sale of ANY of her stuff, so she has to flog it on her own self-named website. And the prices are REALLY high for her “art” (and I use the term very, very loosely. The aforementioned term “scribbles” is far more accurate). Fortunately, once the trial is over and Jodi disappears back into the twilight zone, prices will bottom out, the interest disappears and those fools with more money than brains will never be able to re-sell at the same price they paid. Just expensive bird-cage liners…

I did read an article by a criminal psychologist who said almost what you said about JW and JA. They all know things look very bleak for the defense. The article said that her lawyers’ job would be to say positive things about how court was going to keep her calm in court. One word about KN. The things I’ve read is that he has built his law practice defending child abusers and perverts. That will be his own cross to carry. JW actually mentors young lawyers and teaches some. Dr. DeMarte also teaches at the U of Arizona. Watch out Dr. Dick and ALV. I’m just dying to know what was done in the judge’s chambers re: ALV. Rebuttal today. Buckle up, buttercup!

I think the judge will at least have to release/excuse Alyce who is still under subpoena and sworn in. …. she may not say anything else until instructing the jury when they begin their deliberations? i.e., her testimony was impeached and they are not to consider it? kh

Don’t the instructions from the judge at deliberation says something like if you have found a witness to be untruthful, you are free to use that to evaluate any or all of that witness’ testimony? That should just about do it for ALV.

I love the title today for this post return of the chosen Juan. 🙂 Made me smile.

Did anyone wonder why Willy defense attorney thought it would be acceptable to sit in front of Alexander family? Why didn’t she raise a question or remark on it…I think that was so cruel to the Alexander family….they have been through way more then enough. I cannot even get close to fathoming what they are going through.

As far as IT being insane…I honestly believe she is cold and calculated. I was listening to Juan opening statements and after…don’t you find it eerily creepy that they said someone cleaned up around the sink. In her “accidental pic of the sink you can see her hand in bottom of right photo with a sponge or rag swiping the blood up. It gives me the chills to think that she wiped up around the blood and left the splatter there on purpose. Sometimes I honestly wonder if she literally thought she could be like Casey Anthony and have her name everywhere and then get off scott free. I just don’t understand how someone is so calculated and cold.

When the chosen Juan was showing quite a bit of the interrogation tape (I was shocked, totally forgot about it) detective Flores was saying. Jodi we have your blood and Travis’ mixed and your palm and fingertips impression on the wall – I do believe she left it on purpose..she did tons of cleanup but left very obvious evidense…I think on purpose. She was not in a fog. Also Jodi answered the question “I wasn’t there…really I wish Travis was here because he would tell you what happened.” She knows she did it and she knows they know and yet she answers the question knowing how crazy she would sound.

    It gives me the creeps!

we didnt really dislike the def at first. We made fun of kn socks and jw voice. The anger started as they slowed this down to less than snails pace. Since feb 04 we got 3 witnesses. The most important 3 witnesses. And all we got was them dragging things on endlessly. No credible testimony in months. As annoying as all the mistrial motions have been that removes ineffective council from appealable issue bag. And the def attys had to with what ja told them to do. Ultimately they and experts are jodi victims too

As for Boston, as a lifelong resident, I can promise you, we will not be cowed by this horrific and hateful act. The Marathon is our party with the world, and yesterday was a shocking reminder that not everyone in the world is interested in peace and harmony. I am praying that we will remain strong. I am hoping that the Bruins will play tomorrow night, and I am planning on being in my usual seat after meeting friends at our usual crowded bar. Hate can’t win and it starts with all of us

So true, While I live in RI, my husband is in Boston everyday. Neither of us thought twice about him going today, it was never in our mind that he would not go. Boston is an amazing city and the Yankee perseverance has seen them through tougher times in history. I have no doubt Boston will be stronger.

The stories of the citizens of Boston who helped out and opened their homes and businesses serve to remind all that while a few have hate in their hearts there are many many more who have love, peace and acceptance. Last night, caught up in the coverage and knowing a person who is in Brigham & Womens hoping to keep her foot, I was stuck in my grief, how will I take my daughter to Boston Commons, to my favorite shops on Boylston street?

Today in the new light, it is how can I not take her. Fear will not paralyze me and I hope it does not paralyze Boston.

Now, back to the trial, I feel bad for the defense, it has to suck to be forced to represent someone like JA. Sadly a good defense if never attacking the dead,

Hell, if I was on trial and my life depended on it, I would want my lawyers delaying, coming up with all kind of mistrial motions, and other foolery. I will speak for myself, the only problem I have with the defense is the “defense strategy” in attempting to murder the memory of Travis after his life was already savagely taken. I do have to admit also Nurmi has a way about his personality that makes him seem seedy, unlikeable and unprofessional.

I am pretty sure JW has allowed Jodi to wear mascara today, hence the reason for the glasses coming on and off, LOL. Jodi must be having a hard time with the testimony if Jennifer Wilmont let her wear make-up -to feel better. I can’t pin down the reason but there is something with the hand/broken finger. Her left hand is ALWAYS holding a pencil so that those fingers are bent. I think she may be able to manipulate that finger more than she has said so in order to make sure the jury never sees the finger straight, she has been coached to always have that hand busy or holding something. Just a guess…

JA’s finger has always bothered me – Used to have a girlfriend in high school who had those same “creepy” looking slender hands and she was double jointed. She could make certain fingers do “creepier” things than the others. I’ve heard it discussed on HLN it appears to look like a severed tendon !! Wonder why no one ever required a medical exam of it – since it seems to still be an issue – Looks like she can hold it “funky” when she wants to. Also ~ noted JA looked quite frightening to me today…. was that “seething” I saw ?

Tamara – love your blogs! I’m so glad you recap this as I’m in an office all day. This witness blows the other witness away with her demeanor and she is so well spoken and answers questions so well. The complete antithesis of Alyce. Jackpot for the state! I’ve worked as a court report for many years and can tell you that this dog and pony show happens in every court room I’ve ever been in. It’s normal. The defense is doing it’s job and throwing out all the stops hoping something will stick in just one juror’s mind. It’s what they are supposed to do. Has anyone else noticed Jodi writing with her left hand and sketching (or vice versa) with her right? She seems to be trying to prove the point that she is ambidextrious to everyone watching. I do agree with the other poster that Wilmott is just trying to keep her from acting out and calm.

She just said that Jodi lied on a test (I believe she said lied on ANOTHER test but don’t hold me to that.) Willmott objected and asked to approach and is now having a complete hissy fit to the judge. BUT BUT SHE CAN’T CALL JODI A LIAR! THAT’S MEAN! or something… we can’t hear. Speculation. blah blah blah.

Dufus said, “no, even though her story was a lie, she still experienced trauma so test results were still valid”…HUH? Of course, none of that made ANY sense to me – as a lay person. Okay it’s time for lunch! Brief recap of the morning. Defense rested first thing. Juan called his psychologist as the expert witness. He very briefly had her state her credentials and moved right into questioning. He asked questions and she provided expert testimony. No leading her around by the nose. The defense made several objections here and there but the only memorable one that they one was when the witness went beyond the scope of the question and called stated that Jodi had lied on another test. The jury was instructed to unhear that part. 🙂 Jodi is unhappy with the testimony so she is copying some text from one journal to another to distract herself. The witness put her overall IQ at a 119 which is high, almost two standard deviations above the mean but not genius level. However, her verbal interpretation skills are much higher… I forget exactly I believe in the 130s. This put her in the highest rated category. After essentially very politely eviscerating the testimony of all the former “experts” in her field who testified, the witness is beginning to testify to the personality traits of Jodi. So far she has said she is an aggressive person with a lot of anger who tends to project blame onto others. She was just going down that path when the lunch bell rang.

I am watching the live feed and Juan asked Dr. Demarte if she ever wrote her evaluation answers of Jodi on a yellow legal pad in pencil! An obvious reference when Dr. Samuels had his pencil-written “answers” on a yellow legal pad!

She said no, then explained that the scoring was entered into a computer to get accurate information for the answers. Quite the contrast to Dr. Samuels half-assed assessment!

Let me just say, Juan is brilliant! 🙂

Isn’t she required to be in Court to listen to all testimony? Since obviously she doesn’t give shit, if I was the Judge I’d admonish her. It reminds me of the video taken when she was at some gathering with Travis and all his friends (the one where Travis is describing to his friends his horrible ordeal when he was held up), and Jodi was next to him on a couch LAYING DOWN with her head in his lap, CLEARLY agitated that he wasn’t paying any attention to her, while all his friends’ were on the edge of their seats listening to his story. Makes me just wanna SHAKE her!!! I’m amazed her attorneys aren’t telling her to at least act interested — after all, THIS witness may have a GREAT weight in deciding her fate! Arghhhhh!!!

Shellebelle, they put up an email that Jodi sent to Travis where she talks about her anger and how she “hasn’t hit anyone” but that she has punched walls and broken doors and broken other things. She ends it saying that she hopes to go on to be as Christlike as possible despite her anger. Or something. Meanwhile the expert has shown that she meets the diagnosis of Borderline Personality and not PTSD. Some of her symptoms of BPD include fear of abandonment, history of unstable relationships, taking on the identity of those she is involved with and having no sense of self, suicidal thoughts and acts, inappropriate and intense anger, affective instability (mood swings) etc. Basically the expert is kicking ass. And Jodi has spent the whole day in her happy place writing stuff and pretending like nothing is happening.

La Arias is purposely ignoring Ms. Demarte’s expert testimony as if to convey to all and sundry that it is of no importance to her whatsoever. What is more important to JA is whatever she is doing at the defense table with all her papers, in other words, trying to make herself look MORE important than the expert prosecution witness. She is probably writing that “nothing significant happened today”. But what she doesn’t realize, because she has such an exalted opinion of her herself, is what all the rest of us, and hopefully the jurors too, will see as nothing more than revealing JA’s true nature, that of a self-serving, conniving and delusional manipulator.

I live with PTSD, and this witness absolutely nailed it. She clearly and concisely laid the symptoms, the meaning of those symptoms, and the unlikelihood that Arias suffers from them. It’s awesome to again watch a witness answer questions without equivocating.

Also, I have a measured IQ of 165; I was tested in high school, a LONG time ago, and since half of my brain cells are now dead it’s extremely likely that my IQ is currently half of that, but I still na-na-na-na-na-naaaaaaed at Arias nonetheless.

Too funny, Tamara! After reading your comment, I went right to my “significant other” (an M.D. – Internist) and, laughing, told him what you wrote & that I was doing a checklist of the symptoms for myself! haha! He said I’ve got a couple. Guess who’s not getting any tonite? And maybe the rest of the month! I’m officially addicted to your website. Again, keep of the great work. P.S. Only disappointment is that you make no mention of MY favorite show — Mad Men.

So here’s a question: In the police interview with Jodi’s parents, one of them said that after Jodi came back from Utah (via Mesa), she blurted out (in that first weekend after June 4th), that Travis had been murdered. But the body wasn’t discovered until Monday the 9th! Am I the only one that noticed this, or have I missed something?

Did you notice that in her father’s testimony, he said ja called him and said Travis was either “dead” or “killed” (can’t remember which) – and her dad said HE immediately said to ja “what did you do”?….

LOVE the new witness…didn’t notice voice fry b/c I was mesmerized by her testiony. Listened to every word. Smart, succinct, articulate – and capable of answering “yes”, “no”!….JW will be unable to rattle her. She is cool under fire, despite JW’s attempt to attack her education/experience.

Hi Tamara I’m back and actually functioning pretty good after yesterday if I say so myself. Thanks for all the support from you and your readers to my trauma from the Boston Marathon. Talked to my son a few times always to hear him say “Ma, stop calling me, I told you I am okay” and my response is always “count your blessings that I am controlling myself when all I want to do is get on a plane and crawl in a bed with you to watch you sleep safe”. His response “Ma your sick you know that don’t you”. His knee injury that he got which I am so thankful for is just an inflammation of the illiotibial band and that injury was enough to slow him down so he didn’t hit the finish line at the moment of the bomb detonation.

What is amazing is how resilient these young men and women in their 20’s are. They grew up with September 11 and a ton of bomb threats so the emotional trauma to them is a lot less than it is to us older folks. Sounds crazy to be grateful that your kid has learned to handle tragedy but for now it seems to work. He has heard from all his friends who were also running or spectators and all are fine. While I thank God for my blessings I still pray for those who weren’t as lucky.

Just getting to the trial today on HLN, will watch the you tube videos later. Love this witness and was so excited to hear that she was able to slip in that Jodi lied. We all know you can’t unring a bell so the jury heard it. So strange to see Juan nice and controlled and an articulate intelligent witness actually make sense and answer the questions. I am laughing at Jodi without the glasses, this chick is nuts. I feel for Wilmott who has to suck up to Jodi, pretend she likes her just to keep Jodi calm and thinking Jennifer is her friend. I bet she goes home and takes 5 showers a night, lol.

While I am sure Wilmott wants Jodi to draw and look busy so she controls her psycho self, I think it will backfire (yippee). Jodi looks like she is in her own private world in the padded cell room. She is perfecting this to such an arty form makes me wonder why she didn’t understand that pleading crazy was a much better option to self defense cuz she sure looks crazy to me sitting at the defense table playing with her little notebooks. Must be thinking of good twitter lines.

Thanks for the updates folks, it is such a treat when you can’t sit and watch all day like usual.

today finally – a pace I can tolerate. I like this JM tone better. I think the other was so distracting & now I’m wondering if all that with the other witnesses was purposeful so it would be impossible to focus on anything he or the witness said due to being so annoyed by the whole exchange. I got my 1st degree in psych and I think this witness is very good at relaying the info & relevant decision making etc. now I am really super interested in hearing jury qs for her to see what their reactions are. and that 119 IQ is only considered high avg – not super genius smart. it means in everyday terms, she can learn quickly & process quickly. and that’s what gives her that good memory she has (albeit selective….) I said hung jury before, but this witness is making me say I might be wrong (or I misspoke lol.) she’s giving me some hope that she can cut thru the bs & get this done 🙂

I think I am in love with this witness, lol. The doc is just so damn articulate and pleasant. It is so funny to watch Jodi to continue to try tp pretend it doesn’t bother her. Travis’ family should ask that all her toys be taken away from her. Then let’s watch the real Jodi come out. She is talking the language I am familiar with from years of having my kid tested for learning disabilities. Much better than that babble BS that Dr. FogHorn testified to. Wonder if Alyce is watching the trial and just dying to tweet how this witness is not correct that she and Fog are the only ones who understand Jodi. This case gets better and better for a First Degree Guilty.

Now I have to read from the bottom to make sure I haven’t missed a follow up comment to a thread I was interested in, but did not comment on. And if I just want to pop in and make a quick comment, I have to scroll alllll the way past all the comments-unless there’s some way to just post w/o using the fill-in box at the bottom of the post that I am unaware of, this can sometimes be a (tiny) pain in the neck.
And while I’m being critical, hopefully nicely lol, I also love this re-buttal witness EXCEPT for one, small thing. She has the worst case of vocal fry I have ever heard and it’s driving me crazy…other than that, she’s brilliant, and articulate and professional. She needs to take a speech class so she stops sounding like a valley girlllllll

Sounds to me like you have a deep-rooted need to use fancy and inapplicable words to make an over-the-top characterization of someone who is just telling you to STFU about the use of others’ language. Ignore the comments even if your eyes (or your brain which apparently likes to vocalize those nasty words behind closed doors) are far too dainty and sensitive. “Vocal fry”, love the analogy. We have a tv news anchor that also suffers from vocal fry and I just cannot listen to her, so she has lost me as a viewer. Fortunately for Ms. Demarte, what she says overrides the sound of her voice enough for me to listen to her. I think the only voice type that is worse are those whose voice goes up and up and up and at the end they sound like they end everything they say as a question. “Hi, I’m John and I work for the government?”.

YouTube videos of the testimony of these experts will make great training tools for young experts who have more experience testifying in depositions than at trial:

Samuels and LaViolette: Lawyer’s succinct advice would be “don’t do this.”

DeMarte: Lawyer’s equally succinct advice: “Be like her.”

If QM, the prosecutor, is successful in convincing the Jury that a more appropriate diagnosis for JA is Borderline Personality Disorder rather than the two other disorders of PTSD and Battered Womens’ Syndrome, presented by the defense. I am fearful that if the Prosecutor presents a diagnosis/mental illness that actually sounds reasonable, will the jury then fell sorry for JA and give her a lighter sentence? For almost 4 months we have been trying to figure out what is wrong with Jodi. Now that we do now, will the jury come down as harsh or more harsh since she refused to get treatment. The Psychologist did presented solid date to support her position as to why Jodi has BPD and not PTSD or BWS. I said on another post earlier, could clearly see JA got to wear “Mascara” after the lunch recess and that had lot do with her taking her glasses on and off. I don’t fee sorry for Jodi, but I am sure it was extremely uncomfortable for her to listen to Dr DeMetre’s critique of JA’a personality. I found the doc to be incredibly solid with her testimony. sending hugs to TA’s family and friends!

See this is what is so nice about TT’s blog, you get to learn all sort of neat shit. Vocal fry? I never heard that term before and even after the great video, I still had to make a google run to better understand it. Turns out in this case I am loving me some verbal fry. I think this cross with Wilmott is the soft side of Juan and Alyce. It was so obvious to me that Demarte thinks Wilmott and the defense are a bunch of bozos, lol. I loved her wordsmith with Wilmott over what being a Psychologist means. Wilmott was told you don’t become a psychologist due to having a PHD. Wilmott went right to getting ready to prove that a Masters would do. When Demarte explained AGAIN that you become a psychologist when you take and pass your exam to become certified. Clearly the defense has no clue which might be part of why they found Alyce on the bottom of the barrel.

Dick and Alyce are seeing Jane(en) run, run right over their inexpert “sold my soul to the devil for a buck and early retirement” testimony for just the bull donkey crap it is. Case over.

Today was an awesome day…I love e some Juan and Dr. Janeen soup…so after screaming OMG..not vally girl like..I then remembered that Jodi has BPD like me. That should be a song. Anywho learned 21 years ago and have been thouraghly saturated with a bunch of psych stuff..that was pretty uch helpful. My first fear was..oh dear gosh..am i going to slit someones throat..and then i thought..BPD are not known to kill..but Angry aggressive hostile Possibly Narcissitic Possibly Psycopath people do and Dr Janeen I think still has one trait or personility up her sleeve for Jodi. So if anyone has questions about BPD or feel like teasin..totally good..give it to me…i tease me…that sounds wrong..but please know BPD doesnt equal JA….

ALSO….PLEASE CLOSE YOUR EYE…………i felt sorry for Jodi….because it made her human to me…but ony for about 1.5 secs..then I remembered how calculating and cold she was and just thought of the Alexander family and the feeling left me immediately…switched off like I have BPD 🙂 As far as the jury I think Juan will remind them that on the stand JA admitted to knowing she was Wrong to have killed Travis…that seems an understatement…but it also will make JA guilty.guilty……guilty!
