UPDATE! Some Facebook sites are reporting that Jodi took a pill from the folder that she was deceptively moving around yesterday. Story developing. (That means look into this you guys, I have another post to get up! 🙂 ) VIDEO AFTER BREAK.
No matter how you feel about the Arizona law that allows jurors to write down questions and pose them to witnesses at the conclusion of their testimony, from a trialwatcher perspective we love it. I can’t wait to hear what the jury comes up with to ask Dr. Samuels. That assumes that they are still awake. Let us hope that the defense finishes up their re-direct and sits down so that we can move forward in this case that has become more know for moving at a glacial pace than even the crazy things that we hear from the witness box. GET ON WITH THE SHOW ARIZONA! If you are losing the our interest, the people who seek out trials to watch and discuss with each other, imagine how Ralph the plumber feels waiting around all day for a few hours of mindnumbingly boring testimony. Oh how we miss Judge Belvin Perry! And the cupcake ladies! And the movie choice selections! And just his happy little face!
As usual, we will be keeping you up to date on what is happening in the courtroom. Don’t be shy! We love new commenters!
UPDATE: Jodi Pops a Pill…
Wow these jurors must hate Jodi with a passion by now. All these weeks, these people’s lives have been interrupted. They probably want to give her the needle right there in the courtroom.
If they really wanted to give her the needle, they’d stop asking questions and move on with it already. i understand the need for clarification but to stuff the box with questions, as has been reported, knowing this man didn’t do a full eval and that even that eval was based on a lie is absurd. What questions could they possibly have for him? What ever happened to common sense? The murder couldn’t have happened the way she described and we know she’s lying about control, abuse, pedo, etc. So, what could they possibly be wanting to know?
Patricia..seriously..agree! I mean, what the hell? how many questions does this stupid jury have to ask to make up their friggin minds at this point? jeez louise – COME ON! let’s get to last witness (hopefully) and on to closing arguments (please God, hope Nurmi isn’t doing it but bet his is – that’s probably 4 hrs for him tooooo talk about how Jodi feels…..)
is trial coverage over for the day, Wed., March 20 ???…..I agree with you Susan……let’s get on with it !….do you know the answer to my question ?
I agree
Mollymom,
I’m confused. I thought the jury wasn’t sequestered in this trial? So they actually can’t go home to their families during this whole disgusting ordeal?
They aren’t sequestered but rather than live their normal life to include working their normal job, they are stuck in the courtroom and jury room waiting to hear testimony.
Speaking of judges — does anyone remember that New Yawkah Judge Larry Siendlin (sp?) with the Anna Nicole Smith paternity-burial trial? That dude was a character and a half!
yeah he was a hot mess! think he showed-up as a “guest Judge” on HLN during Casey Anthony trial didn’t he? seem to remember him sitting there giving his “expert” opinion on trial….
he was a guest judge on HLN’s new show HLN After Dark last week, and is just the same as I remember him..too folksy, emotional and fairly inarticulate. Nice guy, but not what I want in a judge.
I don’t watch HLN “After Dark,” it sounds so stupid, and was a knee-jerk to TruAssholeTV for beheading InSession.
trust me, you’re not missing anything! It’s really a cheesy show, with a terrible set up-but I’m a sucker for Vinnie Politan. I usually watch the beginning to see if they mention anything I haven’t heard, then change the channel. It’s really god awful lol
Can I post the video link on here Tamara?? I see where she removes the notebook/folder a few mins later takes a pill adjusts her sweater then the folder/ notebook is back on the table in the next shot
so she’s taking “pills” while at defense table?? wonder what kinda pills – why are they pills in folder – doesn’t she have a pocket somewhere in her jacket, sweater?
And, where did this pills come from & does she have a script? You mean in addition to the ppl of Az being on the hook for her defense, they also have to supply her with pills now?
For her to take medication that is doled out by the D.O.C.s they would require medical personnel to administer it and ensure the consumption. If she truly took a medication out of a notebook she is committing a crime in a court and in front of the Judge… Though, I am not surprised she (the judge) missed it. I feel she is napping on the bench…. She has been a mere presence in the courtroom.
I’m guessing because of her fictitious diagnosis of PTSD she may be prescribed an antidepressant (recommended taken daily at a consistent time) along with some kind of anti-anxiety medication (lorazepam most likely) to be taken as needed. I don’t know how these medications are administered in jail, do they have to have a doctor or psychiatric nurse come by and give it to her and watch her take it every day? And if this is the case, then clearly she got the pills by some other means. Because the pill was in the folder on the defense table, this strongly suggests her attorneys provided it for her. Or else where did she get it from? We don’t have a video showing her taking anything out of her own pockets. No one else is allowed at the defense table–does anyone else think it had to be her attorneys slipping her something?
she should take one that wouuld take her out of her misery forever and save the state some money
I think she just moves the notebook out of view but you clearly see her sticking something in her mouth and taking a sip of water after.
I think the judge is ditz
I saw the pill taking on video. interesting. Here’s the time tags for the notebook, pill, etc.: 18:33-removes folder frm desk 23:14-takes pill 25:10-moves sweater 25:22-folder desk.
Hey Disher! You have a link? I am only finding a choppy video and no consumption of any illicit material….
NVM…. Thanks TT for putting up the Youtube video. WTF? I hold a license in the state I currently reside and that was just as illegal as lighting up a joint at the defense table…. How much worse can these people look in AZ???
oh wow I didn’t know that. what if she was taking an ibuprofen for cramps or something? are you just not allowed to take anything when court is in session?
She just looks so shady doing it. Her eyes get so big as she looks around to see who is watching….it’s creepy.
It makes no difference what kind of meds, (script or off-the-shelf), Nothing is permitted that is not first documented then administered by the facility in which an inmate is incarcerated…unless her attorney has perhaps made arrangements? If that is the case, tho, I would think any med would have to be held, then given during a break by the attorney. I just don’t think that’s legal, tho. Who knows?! She seems to get by with so much!
Judge Stephens said yesterday court will start at 1pm AZ time (4pm ET) today – so btwn gazillion sidebars, defense objections, 5 min recess, 15 min recess, 1 hr+ recess, we might get maybe 1 hour of testimony – whatya think?
Ha, ha, ha,…I fully agree of course. I’m telling you if the trial was held anywhere else, it’d be over by now.
Watching it on HLN, that’s 13 hours. If you were playing a drinking game every time they say “we’ll hit the pause button, but don’t worry you won’t miss a moment”, You’d have alcohol poisoning in the first hour.
Is the trial live today?
For some reason they are not starting until afternoon, Ashley. 4 pm ET.
They are not sequestered, Alessa. They should have been, IMO, and that should have caused a much faster paced case.
But in the Casey Anthony case, that went on forever also, the jurors were sequestered and were so anxious to go home, I honestly don’t think they did their due diligence in deliberating. Just my opinion.
Thanks for confirming, Tamara. I always thought it was a ridiculous decision not to sequester this jury–I thought that usually in any high profile case that’s the protocol so that they aren’t affected by any media coverage or outside opinions of the trial…
Alessa, inmates receive meds at the same time daily in the jail or at night by an RN who ensures they take them as required. She would not be able to take an anti-anxiety drug PRN at the courthouse. The conspirarcy theory goes that it was in the folder that she shadily moved over to her in the FOLDER GATE video in yesterday’s post here. Some think someone slipped her the pill in the folder. It’s very conspriracy theoryish. lol. But who knows with this case?
Can someone look up the Arizona laws about taking medications in court and what the standard protocol for that is? I want to know if she could have been allowed to do that because her attorney was approved to provide it for her (thanks for that info Zz) or if she was blatantly breaking the law, and undoubtedly with her attorney’s assistance. Like I said above, since there is no video of her taking anything from her pockets or anywhere else and putting it in the folder, and since no one else aside from her defense is at the table, there is no other logical way she could have obtained the pills without her defense team’s assistance…
Alessa,
If she is prescribed meds to be taken at a predetermined time maybe her attorney provided it to her. I can’t see them taking her from courtroom. However, if a defendant is medicat I don’t think the jury is allowed to know . For instance if she is taking an anti psychotic or anti anxiety med that would alter her mood or reactions to testimony the jury should not know that. They should be allowed to relive she’s. normal sane non reactive type of personality. Lol. Otherwise it might be prejudicial.
As for juror questions for the good Doc.. I know it drags the trial, out but I am always curious as to what they want to ask . If thy have questions I understand, it is a death penalty case and I would want the opportunity to clarify any questions I might have.
I don’t believe they will agree on death however. I read yesterday that in Arizona that during the penalty phase if all 12 jurors dont agree, the prosecutor can impanel a second jury and even a third for the penalty phase.. After 3’panels do not agree on death it goes to the judge for final decision. At this point with finding of Capitol/felony murder the judge can sentence to 25 to life or life without, parole.
This was too, long and I have been having many problemsn iPad the last couple days posting here on iPad. My comment box either disappears or doesn’t come up. Hitting post before I lose. Sorry for any typos as I’m sure there are some. :(.
In other news, I am the kid in the class that asks questions when everyone wishes I would just shut up so we could all go home. 🙂 In that vein, I do have questions for Samuels.
1) What if any diagnostic tools did you use with Jodi to test for malingering? Particularly due to knowledge of her deception in the past. In particular, did you use any of the vast number of psychological assesments for malingering with regard to her loss of memory?
2) In any of your meetings with Jodi, did she ever express remorse for the murder of Travis? If so. Please refer to and share specific notations from that meeting.
3) What peer reviewed journals have you contributed to with regard to PTSD or Inter Galactic Amensia? If none (there are not any) please identify two leading researchers in the field you are familiar with.
4) How many cases have you appeared as an expert for the prosecution? (answer none)
Great questions and I want the answers!! Today!
Alessa, based on BolognaSandwichGate in which poor Jodi was starving to death because her bologna sandwich did not arrive from jail so court had to end early….one would assume that no one was allowed to buy her a lunch from outside the jail. If the attys etc cannot give her a Big Mac legally, I would highly doubt they could hand her a pill. Even as a public school teacher, no one was allowed to give even high school aged children a midol for PMS. It’s just not done anywhere.
If she took a pill (looks like she took one to me) all hell is going to break loose.
I can see Martinez insisting she come to court trussed up like Hannibal Lector.
On another topic, i am wondering why all of a sudden Judge Stevens is addressing the witness to answer the questions as asked. Did she wake up? Maybe Jodi boosted the pills she was taking?
Tamara, I love those questions! I wish someone on the jury would ask him:
Why did he only administer one PTSD test, especially in light of her history of misrepresentation? (I think Juan asked him this already but it’s a point worth belaboring).
Why didn’t he administer the CAPS (considered the gold standard in PTSD assessment by psychologists)?
Why does he have to refer to the DSM to define “PTSD” if he is a specialist in testifying in criminal behavior and pathology?
WHY DID HE NEVER ADMINISTER THE MMPI? This is again, the GOLD STANDARD in measuring psychopathology, it is an exhaustive, highly reliable, valid test, and a very indicative measure of the tendency of the test-taker to “fake good” or “fake bad.” THREE OF ITS SCALES measure dishonesty and evasiveness. I want to know, why, as a psychologist, he FAILED to administer this test when he knew of the nature of the crime she committed, AS WELL AS her penchant for lying.
I also wish the jury would ask for and be allowed to see the PSD and its questions, so that they can see how easily a test-taker can “fake bad” and manipulate their responses….
Totally agree with you! This Dr is so unprofessional, he gives me the creeps,
the so called doc is an idoit
I would think they get to see the tests in the jury room during deliberations. Don’t they get to review all he evidence.?
OK–I am obsessed with this pill thing, I know… I’m sorry. I just asked a colleague who has significant experience treating in prison facilities and he let me know that typically, when an inmate is prescribed a medication, they are required to pick up their pill at the same time daily, at a window, where the administration and dose is logged.
However, it is easy for inmates to hide their pills, which has led to major issues of treatment compliance in prison. Apparently, because of the relative ease in doing this there is also a growing problem with inmates misusing antipsychotics, pyschotropic drugs like seroquel and gabapentin by faking their symptoms so that they can be prescribed the drugs, chop and snort them for a high,and/or use them for bartering purposes.
HLN is finally discussing the pill incident.
they should. I have been linking them to it eight ways from sunday!
Hahaha good for you!! I was going to start commenting on it too when I saw they were finally talking about it
Here is another video Dede sent me. You will have to click the link as embedded is off. Looks like another sneaky hiding of something. This all happens during sidebars and that is why we keep missing them. I guess we will have to start watching during sidebars.
I wish they had PIP so one camera could be on her at all times for us to watch. The live feeds I watch pan around too much for my liking, but at least I get to see/hear the trial!
THE MMPI is more through which does make it a more reliable test, dumbass.
what did he say about it? did I miss something?
The atty was asking leading questions like, “Just because a test has more questions, does that make it better?” (regarding MMPI) and he said no.
I am now OBSESSED with her sidebar behavior. During that one she was writing with her right hand. Practicing her ambidexterity?
I noticed it too!! Since everything is dame and repetitive right now side bar is the best entertainment
Jodi does have tells when she is being sneaky or lying. Like scratching her face and adjusting her glasses.
The PDS is a SCALE. Thus the “raw data” does not have to be processed. The number of yeses are counted up and that number is the number that you use to refer to the scale.
This ridiculous testimony.
So if the test is not necessarily talking about what happened with Travis and could be about any event that happened to her, why in the hell is it relevant about her trial for the murder of Travis?
My understanding is that this guys testimony is so important to the defense because, only if he has a successful (bunch of BS) testimony as to the jurors opinions, does the next defense witness stand a snowballs chance in hell. I.e. domestic violence/abuse. This murderer is going to literally take down legitimate domestic violence/abuse, PTSD, amnesia and rape victims in the future who will never be believed; and furthermore, every guilty criminal will use all this BS (as it pertains to this creepy JA) as a defense. Wow. This country wonders why all these evil people are on our streets! She is so evil and scary, I hope she gets shut away forever
This female defense attorney is about as annoying as Mr Nurmi and the creepy witness. I missed any jurors questions, or is this still redirect? If I were a juror in there, I would be incensed at this long and arduous exam. Talk about overkill. He acts like he has zero responsibility to turn over anything that discloses how he came to his diagnosis, because, God forbid…no one else there will interpret it correctly? Do they honestly think that JM hasn’t had his expert review all of this and guided him through all of this?. Good grief, Charlie Brown. And BS. he doesn’t disclose his work to other Docs…he puts it into a computer and reads Time Mag!
I wonder myself if this was her first case she was jumping all over what a mess
I always thought that women lawyers who come out of law school sounding like Alvin of the Chipmunks should hire a vocal coach. I once had an L.A. Lawyer, who represented ExxonMobil, call me and she sounded like a 13-year-old. How can you take that seriously??!! You CAN modulate and change your vocal tone and delivery. Unless of course you want to sound like a female lawyer porn star…
Has the word bafoon been used too often yet when describing Dr. Samuels? Notice that when the lawyers approach the judge, there is some sort of sliding rock system where the opposing lawyers must have it in front of them in order to speak to the judge. Almost like a system I would have used in my kindergarten classroom.
lol at the sliding rock system. I hadn’t noticed it. My first graders got to wear a crown when it was their turn. lol.
Does anyone know if this is still redirect or have the Jurors questions been answered..hard to follow when, “We are going to push pause” is said about every five minutes
In real time, we are on a one hour recess while attys look over the questions. Lord only knows how far behind HLN is….
That said Dr. Dufus is not done with redirect….:(
Thanks very much…none of my “live feed videos” are working today.
Tamara ..doesn’t Juan have his own witness th refute Doc Samuels testimony ? Is it possible that the prosecutions psychologist administered the MMPI test that’s could debunk the schmuck defense? I don’t think Juan will let it rest with his testimony.
I also just heard the cost of her defense stands at $838,000.00 right now and rapidly approaching $1million. Yikes. If the jury (all three that ca ne
impaneleddont vote unanimously for death, she will spend the rest of her life in jail. All her medical concerns taken care of, food board and lodging will be provided for her. And her believers will buy her art on eBay so she can purchase better quality food then served in the caferterisn. …if she writes her story I hope it is order that any proceeds go to the FFA,ily of the victim.. She will not be able to profit and use that money to play her manipulative games in prison.
I think the sliding rock is a microphone for the court reporter to better be able to hear and transcribe the attorneys discussion.
WAIT. I was five minutes late getting back to the video and there was apparently a sidebar going on. Then “all rise” and I assumed the jury was just coming in. But then we went to the seal. WTF just happened?
From what the court room tweeter is saying. Someone in the galley is puking violently all over the courtroom. I suppose that is the delay.
Just cancelled court for the day!!! WTF??!!
And court is in recess until 10:30 tomorrow am. BECAUSE OF THE VOMITER!
Court was ready to reconvene when a spectator threw up in aisle. They have to clean it up… First it was said they would be back in 5 then canceled court for day.
It’s is the wackiest trial ever.
Okay is there not any of us who has wanted to vomit during this debacle of a trial (thanks Nurmi and Wilmott — does that $838K get you an early retirement?). Let’s not blame the vomiter but just nod silently in sympathy.
I am watching a sad movie feeling all melancholy and you have to go and make me giggle. You do have a point. 🙂
Jury has over 100 questions for Dr Dufus. It really shouldn’t take that long though. The judge and Jodi got through them quickly.
From your lips to God’s ear. Although I am anxious to hear the jurors’ questions. I bet they tear Dr. Samuels a new one! They are showing new footage of Jodi and a female officer and Jodi is almost begging to see the photos of his stab wounds. This is right before her arrest. So bizarre!
Oh! I am so happy to hear that this happened!!!! I had a procedure done so I have been out of it the past 2 days and I forgot to tape Nancy and everything! How about yesterday? Have I missed anything crucial? Ugh. Are you guys saying that Jody is back on the stand for Juror questions? Was she on yesterday. I can’t believe I forgot to tape some stuff. I feel like I fell off the face of the earth.
Lori, use the category links up under the purple title for this post. click on the jodi arias one and you can read back through previous days in order until you are caught up.
You didn’t miss anything interesting on the stand it was just Dr Samuels droning on with his stupidity for both days. HOWEVER there are some youtube clips you should see from the previous two days. Lots of Jodi weirdness.
The questions will start tomorrow and they are for the good doctor. The jury has 100 questions for him. Sounds like he will be banking another hour or so at his $250 hourly rate.
Hope you are feeling okay.
thank you all so much for keeping me sort of up to date! I had to go out all night and was dying to know what went on today since the damn trial didn’t even start till 4 pm my time! I had to leave my house at 6:15 and was afraid I missed the juror’s q’s!
What a completely awesome spectacle this trial is! Jodi is craaaazy!! She is really..really… unfathomably crazy. I am so glad Juan Martinez doesn’t disguise his opinion of her and her defense team. And can anyone tell me who the woman with the mid length chestnut hair is? The one who immediately runs to sit and chat with Jodi like a school girl on every court break?? They look like they’re planning outfits for a school dance instead of discussing defense strategy.
I’m not really sure myself, but I assume she is a paralegal for the defense simply because no one else would be allowed to approach her like that.
Yeah, that’s what I was figuring too. She annoys me lol. Was there any resolution to pill-gate? I missed all of HLN except for After Dark, which was useless, as usual lol.
