Anguilla Went to Great Expense and Effort to Accommodate the Real Housewives of Atlanta

December 11, 2012 by tamaratattles 84 Comments

Anguilla-IslandYou would think that when Bravo takes the Real Housewives on trips, that they foot the bill. But they don’t. They contact the tourism department and ask to be accommodated in exchange for the publicity. While I knew that this occurred, I did not realize the  extent that the small countries go to in order to accommodate the housewives.  Remember when Marlo asked for hair and make-up in South Africa? Not only she got it but the person they called in was not paid.

In Anguilla, the country could not afford the cost of accommodating the ladies and the crew so everyone came together to donate their businesses and time in hopes of improving tourism to Anguilla. After the break you will see the entire speech the  Parliamentary Secretary of Tourism gave after the housewives  departed Anguilla thanking everyone responsible for the production. You can see that Nene Leakes required special accommodations and a “glam squad,” so a local company volunteered to try to meet her diva requests.

The text from the speech is long so I bolded the important parts for the lazy and I made a couples of remarks in purple to explain a few things. Let me know what you think!

anguillaboatsGood afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I am here today to thank all of those who worked so hard with me to make the production of the Real Housewives of Atlanta filming in Anguilla a reality. I must especially thank them because when this opportunity was presented to me while at the June CTO New York by the Britto agency; I had to wrestle with the fact that Anguilla did not have the budget or the financial wherewithal to undertake such as production.

I therefore reached out to home to get some advice on the fiscal situation and was advised that neither the Anguilla Tourist Board nor the Ministry of Finance and Tourism had the financial resources to take this important project on. I reverted to the Britto agency and they indicated that this production could still be a possibility if we could get the industry partners to do some sponsoring in kind. After some initial feelers, I was pleased with the response.

ani-villas-anguilla-north-01Grasping the vision and idea, and first on board, were Mr. Sherwin Richardson of the spectacular Modena Villa in the Cove, and Ms. Bonnie Bloom of world renowned ANI Villas in Limestone Bay. I must place on record my gratitude especially to Ms. Bloom who not only understood the vision, but also offered up both ANI Villas to house the entire cast of the Real Housewives. Not only did she house them but did everything necessary for them to have a most enjoyable stay, so much so that the producers exclaimed, there was no drama in the house.

There are many others to be thanked, and they include Mr. Jeff David and his extraordinary team at Viceroy Anguilla. They offered no fewer than ninety (90) room nights, an offer which, as anyone could  expect, was at a tremendous cost to the resort; Mr. Bernard Sarmes, Mr. Malcolm Webster, Ms. Patricia Bryan and the great staff at the legendary Cap Juluca Resort, for going above and beyond, by creating the atmosphere, and constructing an ocean platform where lunch for the cast was served and filmed.

ani_villas_anguilla_page_littleBayClifIn doing so, these individuals exceeded the expectations of all; Mr. & Ms. Ian Edwards of Sunset Homes, Mr. & Ms. Eudoxie Wallace of Gorgeous Scilly Cay, Mr. Bankie Banx and the Dune Cat, Miss Tahirah Banks, Mr. David Lloyd and Ms. Vida Lloyd-Richardson of Davidas for the scrumptious dinner they provided for the cast. That night captured the essence of the show. I would also like to thank Mr. Timi Webster of On da Rocks, (this is the place with the Fuck me drinks where Kandi and Todd filmed) Mr. Tyrone ‘Latest’ Brooks and the Exodus Band for providing a memorial experience, Lanvol ‘Pantha’ Hughes, Pantha Vibes Intl and the PVI fan club, (I doubt this makes it to air, my sources say the housewives stayed for five minutes and left)  Ms. Valencia Prentice, Mr. Girdon Connor and the Klassique Dance academy for creating what will undoubtedly leave a lasting memory with both the cast and the crew. Ms. Karla Hughes, the Management and Staff of Dolce Vita Restaurant, Ms. Simone Connor and Mr. Sil Connor of Sandy Island who hosted the renewal vows of Peter Thomas and Cynthia Bailey, and Rev Erica Carty for officiating at the ceremony. I would also like to thank Miss Roxanne ‘Roxxy’ Webster and Ms. Rachel Haskins of ‘Hello Gorgeous’ for making the special effort to accommodate Ms. Leakes and going above and beyond to make her happy. (I can’t believe, Nene demanded a hair and makeup team. Oh, wait, yes I can)

Exclusive: Guess Who Came on the RHOA Trip to Anguilla? So many local partners came on board to make this a reality and I cannot thank them enough. Mr. Dennis Mussington and his crew that did the transportation, Mr. Rosmund Davis and crew of Calypso Charters for doing all the sea shuttles complimentary, the Customs and Immigration Department, Permanent Secretary, Mr Foster Rogers, for his advice and support in this venture, the Ministers of Government –  in particular the Hon. Chief Minister and  the Hon. Jerome Roberts for their unwavering support, Mr. Alejandro Raygoza and Dolphin Discovery, Ms. Gilda Gumbs Samuel of the AHTA and Ms. Sherille Hughes, past President of the AHTA, Mr. Keithly Lake of the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce for his support, and lastly but most importantly, Ms. Marvet Britto and the BRAVO network. It is especially rewarding when such a major production as this can be done without the tax payers having to pay for it. Undoubtedly, the entire country will benefit from the exposure and my gratitude goes out to all of the above for making this a reality. It goes to show that the age old quote is alive and well:  Where there is a will, there is a way!

Our mandate is in keeping with the Sustainable Tourism Master Plan and that is, to ensure that Anguilla becomes more visible and by so doing, increase the number of visitors to our shores. We believe that through continued web marketing and major television productions such as these, we are achieving the same. Already, Anguilla is reaping the rewards of this production with all of the outtakes and US websites and blogs that are mentioning the filming and the destination, and we can all look forward to the upcoming RHOA season and the 2013 Tourist season with great expectations.

Thank you and may God Bless Anguilla.

I hope they do see some benefit from it. I hate when the shows pretend like “so and so” paid for the trip (Peter this time).

Bravo should have cut the part where Kenya acts like an ass over her “subpar” room – it was FREE and the resort should’ve been given a little more respect in the editing.

It was gorgeous – I’d definitely visit. And maybe even moreso now because these poor people did all that for free for Bravo (who can afford to pay for vacays or at the very least for the services!).

I was going to say same thing. It’s a shame that these individuals, companies or “rich bitches” get comped items and amenities they can more than pay for themselves; especially in places such as Anguilla that are financially strapped. The LEAST Bravo could’ve done was throw them a bone with some more respectable footage.
And once again, not to bash NeNe, but for someone that claims to be real 100, you’d think she’d show a little more humility since no one even knew who she was 3 years ago.

Peter can’t even afford to go around the corner good, let alone pay for a whole cast of women going on a trip. But I guess Bravo gotta make this show as real as possible since it’s so fake.

I have never thought that the person (Peter) planning the trip, was paying for the trip. I go on trips with friends all the time and someone plans it and gives us the information. You always get a better deal if you have a group traveling. I just thought Bravo was paying for it.

La Corchis, Nene in on the Beverly Hills housewives??? Hmmm let me think about that one. See the problem with that is RHOBH ladies has REAL money. They would shut Nene and all that bragging DOWN! Nene would look so subpar on that show compared to the rest of the ladies. She would look more pathetic than Taylor, Brandi, and Kim. They would sure nuff have a new punching bag. But I’d love to watch it. I’d tune right in EVERY week!

These people should have their heads examined. Worst use of marketing dollars ever. I tweeted during the show that I could not imagine paying the price one has to pay to stay in such a resort and having these trashoids as neighbors — hootin an a hollerin and bootieshaking and just generally being classless. So, they scared away their target audience (not many if whom probably watch HWs to begin with), and invited people who can’t afford to stay there. If they did save their nickels and get there, their expectation of how one behaves are way off.

Tamara, I just love your blog. Do you find it odd that none of the RHOA blogs are up yet? Especially Kenya’s. She usually has her blog up before the show is over. Could it be she’s ashamed of her hoeish behavior this week? Hmmmm…. I wonder. I also have to comment on PK Phaedra. I’m sure her mother is so proud! Willie Watkins probably stopped studdering when he saw her in that outfit. She should have wrapped that donkey booty up in a prayer cloth. I know, I know, I just lost points in Heaven. I’m not judging, I’m just saying…..

I also hope they are more than compensated by increased bookings. I fear the behavior of HW’s may be the kind that further leaves the impression that Americans are spoiled and rude people. Nene never fails to reinforce why I dislike her. No matter how rich she gets or tries to say things to make herself look wonderful, I ain’t buying what she’s selling.

I doubt those owners and workers make much money. I hope to hell they got a huge tip from the cast. Somehow, as classless as most of these gals are I kind of doubt it. Maybe Kandi would tip. That’s the only person I can think of that might.

I would like to add, during the planning luncheon, I recall Cynthia saying, she (Kenya) can come but I’m not paying for her ticket. And really they filmed there in what July, which is off season, which means you can get room dirt cheap in the Caribbean. 1/2-3/4 less than off season. Even these women/Bravo could have afforded it. Height of Hurricane season, hotter than hell, surely they could have thrown a few bucks their way.

We live in a rich country with vast resources. There are people in other countries that don’t have television, internet, etc. in their homes. A lot of these resources are reserved for the very wealthy and big businesses. Some of us cannot even imagine working for free to support our country. Anguilla is beautiful on many different levels.

When I lived in Antigua we got water delivered by a truck in a barrel or collected the rain water. When you showered you turned on the water, got wet, turned it off, sis everything you needed to do and turned it on to rinse yourself off. Oh and it was not hot water as the sun was the hot water heater, so best to take your shower in the late afternoon.

You don’t have to be a wife (apparently you can rent a boyfriend), you don’t have to be rich, heck you don’t even have to be from or actually live in the “home city”.. Thanks for making it easy for the lazy… but I got so caught up I forgot to just read bold and purple so read the entire thing. I think it is shameful how Bravo takes advantage of a small country like Anguilla and doesn’t really edit or give good credit. How about a clip on their website that does a free marketing of the island and all it’s venues, etc. How about a thank you message for their hospitality and shame on the damn broads who carry it to the diva extreme by demanding services above and beyond. We all know damn well when Ms Nene n Ms Greg travel on their own dime they do not have an entourage catering to her whims. Hell I bet she too cheap to use a first class hotel’s salon in the first place.

I don’t think the vacay spots take advantage of the advertising opportunity to really work it to their advantage so that their expense really pays off. Bravo hires these fools and pays them well, they ought to insure that they accept the room they are offered without bitching about it and absolutely should not be allowed to ask for diva services unless they pony up the bucks to cover it. And I bet not a one of these broads coughed up any tipping money for services.

I mean if it wasn’t for Tamara and all her hard work I wouldn’t know any details on the resorts they stayed at or anything so how does that educate me as a potential tourist about the island and the venue? I need these fool islands to hire me to handle their marketing demands so they don’t give up so much for nothing in return, SMDH.

Why do you think the housewives know the details? When i go on a business trip, the company pays all of my expenses. Hotel, car, food, etc. Why would’t the housewives think that Bravo or production company is paying for the trip? I always thought that Bravo was paying for the trips. Bravo is paying on the barter system. It’s just not the way I thought. Do you have any idea how much money is spent on marketing?

Product placement and sponsors are part of nearly every single TV/Movie production…If James Bond drives an AUDI you can be sure a lot of money is paid, if J.Lo drinks Coke during American Idol its sponsored, if Anderson 360 is wearing Armani its sponsored, product placement is EVERYWHERE, but sometimes just more cleverly hidden – …..Its just a new way of brainwashing audience/consumers – Everybody wins !

Bravo should not expect a freebee for any of their production crew and should have to pay for all of their rooms, meals, etc. What is the big deal here? Please help me understand. Bravo can afford to pay for a trip with the millions of advertising dollars they made. That episode had great ratings.

Thats why they had two trips that season

as for the other shows its clear they dont pay for anything. the girls will walk into their rooms and say “oh my what a nice suite *insert hotel* provided” or go to a restaurant or venue and say “oh my *insert venue* is such a beautiful place, i love *insert whatever the business sells*” nobody with good sense talks like that

lovesrealitytv, the easiest way to fly to Angullia is to go through Puerto Rico so you can avoid that ferry transport they were doing on the show. I would bet money that the production crew themselves also went this route because they had equipment to transfer to the island, and that boat trip they left for the girls to make filming look more interesting. (Hopefully) it won’t make things any more expensive to go the direct flight route. It really is a beautiful place and the local rum is amazing.

You still think this was Peter surprising Cynthia? And now you think the tourism guide was confused when he talked about having to keep Nene happy and he really meant Cynthia and Peter? That’s a lot of jumbled thought.

Oh, wait, yes I can)

well i hope whoever that hair stylist was who nene demanded took care of the back of her head. in the lunch scene with kim they mustve had a camera man who wasnt very fond of nene because that one camera kept displaying that nasty rough looking over bleached hair she combs waaaaaaay to the front of her head. last time i checked when you film its always supposed to be a side or front facing view and not directly the back of someone head, idk if i was the only one who obseved that.

Tamara, no that is not what I meant. Cynthia would not be in charge of her own surprise. Anyway, there is nothing wrong with asking for services that you need.

Asking for services is one thing, this was something different. She didn’t need a team while on the trip. That’s just crazy. It’s not like she was on the set of her other show, this was filming on the beach.

Hands down your sit is theee best! Dissappointed to read about Nene and her hollywood ways. This RHOA is my least favorite of all. Your blogs are really better than the darn show. Phaedra is my however one of my favorites of all the Ladies.

Wow thanks for the letter. I always know that these things are staged and rigged, but for a county to extend hospitality to that degree deserved a better take than what Bravo did. I’m inclined to go ONE DAY. However, I’m so very disappointed in NeNe for her diva ways. Just be thankful that God has allowed you to move up, and always remember where you come from. Life is one day you have and the next day it can be gone. Don’t ever think too much of yourself because there is someone more mighty than you – who holds your trump card.

Cornella-it was mean when Nene said “you have to take a boat to another boat to get to another boat…where are the cars?” It looked like a lot of fun to me.

It just occurred to me that Bravo is the same company that provided Lindsey Lohan with 200K worth of home decor stuff, and yet, they can’t even help the economy of Anguilla when they go down there to shoot? Really Bravo? Not a single meal or a single hotel room, nothing?

Well you can laugh at the LL decor stuff because she refused to film the reveal so they’re using pics they took during production, not new with her footage.

I’d be VERY surprised if Bravo laid out $200k in cash for LL’s decor. I’m sure it was the same sort of in-trade arrangement as happened in Anguilla, with the $200k figure as the retail value of the donated merchandise and labor.

Somewhere around season 3, reality people suddenly are stricken with a disability that keeps them from being able to apply their own makeup or brush their own hair.

I rankles enough to watch pretentious HWs speak as though they are personally picking up the tab for these requisite trips, but then to discover that Bravo isn’t even paying a discounted rate is yet another disappointing revelation. Every time another truth comes out about Bravo’s brand of reality it’s uglier than the last.

By the way, not everyone is so enamored of Bravo’s promotional value. I understand that after the last fashion show fiasco the venue they used (a country club?) declined to continue to host them.

Maggie, Bravo always ends up fucking them in editing. This thing with Kenya begging for another room? Disgraceful after all they did for them. I read all this back in August after they left. I assumed they would get a good edit. And wow. It’s dirty.

    Wow!

I really had no clue that islands and countries accommodate ppl on their bill. I thought Bravo and any other networks would handle that.

Well, at the end of the day, I guess a boost of recognition to that island is a spin off benefit. I’m originally from the islands (Antigua), so I’ve seen this go down, but just not with reality TV members being accommodated.

Anguilla is indeed a financially challenged and BEAUTIFUL island. I’ve been there and I’m planning on going back very soon.

BRAVO did not do the country justice with their lackluster filming and portrayal of the country. They should have gone to great lengths to maximize Anguilla’s investment, but once again Bravo dropped the ball. That was in poor taste, but then again Bravo is almost always in poor taste.

As for Nene, it just so happens that the Atlanta Housewives seem to ‘stalk’ me as they go to many venues that I have visited just before or after I go and I can tell you that waiters and other staff in the service industry frequently speak to how she treats them like dirt.

It is fine if you find her funny, but please know that the woman is nasty and ungrateful. Hoodrat type chic. You better watch your heros.

@ B Boy in Harlem- Nene isn’t even a hoodrat. She’s more like a country rat. That is 1 reason I hate watching that show is hearing all those annoying down-south accents (no diss to southerners). It just sounds weird to New Yorkers as I am.

@Socialkenny, It is more diction and enunciation than southern accent. The RHOA ladies don’t even have a drawl.

Those are not Southern Accents. People in certain neighborhoods all across the country have that same “accent”.

@Beejcee- Hell no! That is a down-south country accent. They don’t sound that bad in Chicago nor Texas. Ppl in NYC where I’m from, nor anyway else in the north East US sounds like that even slightly. You cannot find 1 person on the East Coast US who sounds remotely like that (from DC upwards).

Something about this is bothering me, because I’ve shot with teams on Anguilla many times…as well as having worked in production before (that dreadful work was my first job and then later in my 20’s no thanks to my masochist fashion photographer husband at the time, I ended up running my own company producing for European clientele in Florida & the Carribean–hated it)…and Anguilla has always been a very tiny, very quiet, but jet destination set that is not remotely cheap. It’s standard for fashion, film, and tv professionals to get comps or discounts there, yet as snazzy as things are there on the tourist end of things are I can’t imagine they place would go bankrupt or struggle to accommodate a film crew- especially when you break down the numbers in a standard production budget over the 7 days they shot there. This teeny tiny speck in the ocean is expensive as hell. No lie, staying at the Cusinart Resort for example, room service for just me, with a couple glasses of wine is $250+ (and thank God it goes on the client’s master bill ’cause that in’t in MY budget, lol!!!).

So while I can see that the house and some meals may have been comped for the women, any additional crew the breakdown is like this: Bravo/the production company organizing has to pay for flights, transportation filming permits, insuring the entire production, distribute per diem for crew. They likely also have discounted accommodations as well, but this is all done in exchange of promotional consideration. they also will work in conjunction with the local production companies there, usually “one man band” type situations that have the hook-up for everything. But it’s still going to be pricey on the network’s behalf and there is no way to escape that.

Now mind you, the island is already full of there own tourists, really really RICH people, man, that pay a fortune to be there in all that rustic island simplicity. It’s not sitting well with me that suddenly they are too small that they can’t handle a reality tv production. It doesn’t make sense… But all’s well ends well I guess, sigh.

Oh, and that Marlo with the hair & make-up in South Africa? The people at the resort must be asses for not compensating the young lady who did her hair & make-up—because the reality is they could have just gotten someone from Capetown. Capetown is a major shooting hub for Europeans in the fashion industry, it was established as such before the Germans went and “re-built” Miami Beach which later became their competition . They have all the hair and make-up agencies on the same level as any other European fashion capital ( because many of their artists are from Europe and spend winter season working there)…how cheap were they to not just book someone from an agency for Marlo? Good grief, the exploitation…

I can agree with backporchcafe. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Anguilla. It’s extremely expensive compared to most Caribbean destinations. It’s not affordable to average Americans. It’s expensive to eat, even simple meals. Almost everything is imported. BTW, this is the place were Brad and Jennifer broke up, It’s really for the wealthy and celebrity crowd. The island provides privacy and a very casual vibe. Locals and guests mingle (unlike many other islands). I’m not sure how much it will improve tourism now that the shows have aired.

@Jac- I think you’re right. I live just down the road (in essence) on the island of Antigua. We get a lot of American tourists since it’s affordable to come here. Mainly French tourists go to Anguilla.
