Jaqueline Laurita’s Son Nicholas Has Autism

August 22, 2012 by tamaratattles 45 Comments

People magazine is exclusively reporting some sad news for the Laurita family.  Jaqueline’s adorable son Nicholas has been diagnosed with autism. The article states that around 18 months Nicholas began regressing in his speech and motor skills. This set off a red flag for me, as I have a family member who had a serious reaction to the DPT shot at 18 months.  I am firmly on board with all the “crazy people” who believe that the DPT shot causes autism. I know most of you will argue with me. But “something” happens to make a child who is progressing normally to regress at 18 months. We give way too many vaccines in this country. Okay, I’ll get off my soap box now.

Jaq was going through the doctors visits and diagnosis during the filming of season four. I’m sure this contributed to her emotional state during the season. Jaq told People magazine that she is concerned about Nicholas’ ability to be independent when he is older. Chris said the diagnosis was difficult to accept.  Jaq is reading everything she can in order to find ways to help her son. Best wishes from Tamara Tattles to the Laurita family.

Note: Though I usually do not moderate comments, I will delete any negative comments about children. This is not the appropriate story to express ill will toward the Laurita family. Behave.

I support vaccines, but think its a smart thing to split them up and not give so many at the same time.. If you ever watched a kid with whooping cough , you would understand there is a need for vaccines… Our low infant and child mortality rate (compared to 50 percent a 100 years ago) is directly due to those vaccines.

My heart really aches for them. I do agree with you Tamara regarding the numerous issues arising from vaccines. Yes I believe SOME vaccines are necessary, but I have noticed the more we hear about vaccinations, the more we here of children be diagnosed with autism. Something had to happen in order for a normal development progress to be stunted. It does give way to why Jacqueline is on such an emotional roller coster. I really feel bad for the family.. sheesh..

I think you mean the MMR, not the DPT, and the MMR/Autism link has been disproven over and over. There have been several doctors who have said you can see signs in children before 18 months, but parents don’t know what to look for, and it just becomes more obvious at that age.

First, I really enjoy this blog and all the crazy housewives’ drama. These things provide a nice distraction from my day job as a professor at a national university, specializing in U.S. vaccine law.

Please, accept this above all else, vaccines do not cause autism. There is no credible, evidence proving such a link. The study that first made this claim was conducted by Andrew Wakefield, working with several other physicians in the UK. They said that the MMR vaccine, NOT DPT, caused austism. The study has since been disproven and Wakefield’s colleagues have all admitted their errors. Unfortunately, the negative effects have lingered ever since.

Parents, in utter dismay, are understandably searching for answers to the autism question and have targeted vaccines because young children just happen to receive several vaccines. Vaccines are administered early in life to provide protection against vaccine preventable diseases as soon as possible. Coincidence is NOT causation.

Recently, studies have shown a genetic component associated with the development of autism. Autism is frequently triggered and becomes obvious at 18 months, similar to other conditions that become obvious at certain ages. Think of Parkinson’s or Huntington’s diseases, which manifest themselves in adulthood.

Only a misinformed parent would reject early vaccination of their children.

As for the adverse event that your family member experienced post DPT vaccination. That particular vaccine has been removed from the market, because it was proven that some children reacted negatively. However, DPT does not cause autism.

A professor specializing in vaccine law = a lawyer who represents drug companys who make vaccines. And that DPT shot that was removed from the market? It was equally represented as safe by drug companys, the US government, and attorney representing the drug companies.

I have a JD, however I am employed by a university and have chosen to conduct research in vaccine policy. I do this because vaccines have proven to be an unparalleled public health success. I chose vaccines over all other topics I was offered.

My work is funded by my employer, the government, and vaccine manufacturers. I also work with nonprofits, health and medical providers, and the consuming public both in the US and abroad. It’s sad to say, but people in other countries are far more interested to find enough vaccine to protect their children, than in the US.

Frequently, I take the time to engage individuals who oppose vaccines. They have been, without exception, hostile and misinformed when confronted with the facts. They think they know more than science and other stakeholders.

What is so wrong with a vaccine manufacturer, anyway??? Someone has to step up and make products to improve our health. Have you ever taken an aspirin? A vitamin? Pap smear? Botox? Prescriptive glasses?? Hearing aids??

I doubt you have ever spoken to anyone who “opposed vaccines” that’s propoganda talk. I imagine you spoke to people who have had children with adverse reactions to certain vaccines and would like them to be studied further. You probably have also talked to people who believe that this country has gone overboard on the number of vaccines that are required by the government of this country. I am not surprised that you would find them “hostile and misinformed.” The makers of vaccines are adamant that they alone have “the facts.” and do not like those “facts” being questioned. The large majority of the population will never question the safety of vaccines being given by their trusted pediatricians and endorsed by the government. Take the commenter below, “Justme” as an example. As long as they have a degree on the wall, they must have all the knowledge necessary to make a decision about their child.

I think I trust the opinion of a person with an advanced degree, over a hunch. I have lived overseas and in the States and I can honestly say that Autism is more prevalent in the US and the UK yet children around the world (both developed and underdeveloped countries) are receiving the same shots…

You are completely misinformed if you believe that “children around the world” are all receiving the same vaccines. There are huge variances both in number and quality. The US requires 26 vaccines more than any other country in the world as opposed to Sweden and Japan who require 12. Where did you say that autism was more prevelant again? And it’s not just autism that causes people to question the number of vaccines…

I do feel badly for this young boy. He will face challenges in life but with the right kind of help, can function. I’m not real knowledgeable about this, but I know (from reading quality rags like People and Insider) that the future isn’t as bleak as it once seemed for these kids.

Edited: I will not tolerate nasty comments about Nicholas or his parents in this comment section, you have the whole rest of the site for that.

I use to be all for vaccines but as I got older and had to be subjected to a vaccination shot. I am rather weary about missing them. I received a tetanus shot as well as they mixed the whopping cough vaccination together. I went in for a physical and the next day I was in emergency broke out in hives and just swollen all over. Due to me later finding out I had an allergic reaction to those vaccinations. I support parents with special needs children because it takes a lot patience and compassion to be able to cope with daily and on going prognosis. I know this to be true because I am special education facilitator.

wow, this really sheds light on her overly emotional demeanor this season. I really feel for her entire family. It’s definitely challenging. Fortunately (or unfortunately, I don’t know which), there’s a huge community of support. Some, like Jenny McCarthy, say they have cured their children of autism. Now, I don’t know the science behind it, but I do believe it’s important to empower yourself with all the knowledge you need and not blindly rely on anybody– including well-intentioned, but often ill-informed doctors.

Better yet you delete her comments when she is simply responded to yours with facts and again her experience. You made a strong statement about vaccines on the blog and was allowed to state your opinion openly….why not offer this poster the same?

I guess your intimated because she sounded educated and well versed on this topic….and pretty much had a lot to back up her point of view. BUt it is pretty sad that because of ur lack of substance….you chose to block someone else for the abudance of substance

First of all this is my website. I own it and I control what is allowed on it. Alexandra made her point in two extensive posts. She quickly began posting propoganda associated with her employment. This is not the forum for that and I will not allow it here. Her deleted posts, which you did not see, contained nearly every logical fallacy from argumentum ad misericordiam to argumentum ad nauseam (perhaps the most annoying). She is not a reality TV fan who is here sharing her opinion, she is an activist for vaccines, in particular HPV vaccines which she was instrumental in getting in the DC and Virginia school systems as “required vaccines.” An flu vaccines which she lobbied to be manadatory for health care workers in her region. I am not willing to give her any more of my time or website space to spew her opinions on vaccinations. Had I been disallowing her opinions because they differed from mine, you would never have seen them in the first place.

Should you, Bev, disagree with how I choose to run my website you are kindly invited to get the fuck off my site and find one that is more to your liking. I hope I have made myself abundantly clear.

It is ignorant to say breastfed babies are not healthier than formula fed babies. Do some research, its all there. Breastfed babies are not only healthier, they are also smarter.

Google – the Amish and the Homefirst Health Services in Chicago, no autism seen in the unvaccinated 30-35K children , not one case of autism. Homefirst founder & director, BA STats, Masters-Public Health, law degree. Author of ” Don’t vaccinate before you educate!”

“We do have enough of a sample,” Eisenstein said. “The numbers are too large to not see it. We would absolutely know. We’re all family doctors. If I have a child with autism come in, there’s no communication. It’s frightening. You can’t touch them. It’s not something that anyone would miss.”

Oh God. I am really upset as an autism parent to read all the anti vaccine comments here. Vaccines did not put my son on the autism spectrum. Genetics did. I am sorry about your niece, Tamara, but it is so dangerous to scare people even more than we already are about vaccines. Hundreds of babies died because of Andrew Wakefield and Jenny McCarthy. Hundreds more in the Pacific NW and New England were treated for pertussis the past few years. This post upsets me a lot.

You have to wonder what changed in the past 50-100 years when there were not the Autism statistics now. How are our genetics going to change this much? Obliviously has to be related to our environment in some way shape or form! I read an article on how S. Korea has now developed our vaccine schedule and Autism rates have skyrocketed after doing this and 1 in 38 now diagnosed. Scary!! Why are doctors and government that sets up these vaccine schedules looking at these alarming statistics?!!

Because for some reason it has become “CRAZY” to suggest that a vaccine we give our kids around the age of onset of autism has anything to do with it. Big Pharm has somehow brainwashed people to believe that questioning what we inject our children with makes us crazy and reckless and is endangering the lives of others. Somehow research that can’t find a connection means one does not exist. It’s bizarre.
