John Mellencamp Rocks Tulsa in Woody Guthrie Tribute

March 11, 2012 by tamaratattles Leave a Comment

This Land is Your Land: A Woody Guthrie Centennial Concert in Tulsa, Oklahoma was by all accounts a rousing success last night.  Most interesting perhaps was the unusual combinations of artist’s singing together.  Jackson Browne’s pairing with The Flaming Lips to sing Along in the Sun and the Rain and Arlo Guthrie and Hanson teaming up on Going Down the Road Feeling Bad stand out as two unexpected pairing that were well received by the sold out crowd.

Mellencamp played  Guthrie’s This Train in Bound for Glory and Do-Re-Mi before introducing his smash hit Pink Houses  by saying he flat out stole the song from Woody. Toward the end of the concert, Mellencamp and Arlo Guthrie joined up to sing Oklahoma Hills before a sort of all in sing-a-long occurred with everyone singing This Land is Your Land at the end.

The primary source for this story  is Jennifer Chancellor who has the intimidating title of WORLD SCENE WRITER and whose copyright info is for World Publishing Co.  which is all sorts of MediaFakeOutish to me. I’m sorta worried she is going to go all Oklahoma on my ass just for glancing at her story.  That said, it’s a really good first person account of the story if you are interested . Go read it here at tulsaworld.com and be sure to click the link there for the photos.
