The Real Housewives of Atlanta ventured off the Shamwari properties on last night’s episode to head into Port Elizabeth. That was a forty-five minute drive with both the talls and the smalls in the van. A nice drive along the Eastern Cape would normally be a fantastic experience to see new sights and learn new things. The ladies were very near to the birthplace of Nelson Mandela. I’m sure if they ever heard of him they might have made a stop along the way at his birthplace or any of the numerous museums honoring him and remembering Apartheid. But they apparently did not.
With Nene complaining the whole way there, (Marlo thankfully got food poisoning or something so was turned down a notch on the drive) the ladies went to the Xhosa Cultural Center. Port Elizabeth is a stop for nearly all South Africa cruise ships. For that reason this cultural center reminds me of a place in South Carolina off I-95 called South of the Border. If you are an east coaster you have probably at least driven by it on a road trip. Imagine if someone from South Africa came to the states and chose South of the Border as the only east coast destination. That is basically what the real housewives did.
Sure you learn a bit about the Xhosa culture there, but it is about a touristy as you can get, complete with personalized reading of the bones. It would not surprise me if it was the only option for the housewives. I’m sure after being at Shamwari for a few days word got around. It is BEYOND embarrassing for Atlantans.
I just can’t blog about all the ignorance and vile behavior last night. What I will do is talk about what Nene Leakes was doing during the airing of the show. Click through the jump to find out.
Nene Leakes posted thirty some odd tweets last night from the time the show aired until the end of What What Happens Live
. In those tweets, she insulted all “the smalls” particularly Sheree and Kandi. She said the were full of shit, and reporting to their “boss” more than once. She called Jackee drunk on the show for saying that she lacks fashion sense. (It’s not just fashion, Jackee). She seems to think that Kandi is jealous of her. (for what?) She claims the Watch What Happens Live
polls are rigged. (But only when she doesn’t like the outcome), And she is again encouraging her fans to let Bravo know that she is the star of the show while also saying she has outgrown the whole thing and is stuck in a contract. She also chose to respond to someone asking about her spin-off by implying she turned Bravo down. Read them for yourself.

We begin in the place we left off with the Sheree and Marlo catfight. You have to hand it to Sheree, she managed to be a central character in not one but two major fights this season! Way to make yourself a storyline there Sheree. I never like it when I watch the sneak peeks because the whole rest of the Cape Town scenes seemed like a rerun to me. So off we go to Shamwari!
Why are they trying to act like they drove from Capetown to Shamwari? That’s over five hundred miles. They flew from Capetown to Port Elizabeth where the spent a day or two before driving to Shamwari. Why didn’t they at least acknowledge that? They will fly out of Port Elizabeth as well so perhaps we will see some of that before they head back to The States.
I am shocked that they stayed at the lodges they did. I suppose they knew better than to put the girls in the tents, but still it would have made for good TV. The “tents” are five star accommodations with indoor plumbing (and outdoor showers) but the outer “walls” are canvas and critters can and do get in! That would have been fun! Nene and Marlo were in Long Lee Manor Lodge.
I did not see enough of the smalls rooms to see where they were staying.
Cynthia at least had the sense to wear costume jewelry. Also, once again I love the braided wig she brought. This trip was Cynthia’s shining moment to be the most sophisticated, sensible person in the group. Bless her heart, she really should have rolled with the smalls. She didn’t deserve to have her trip disrupted the way that she did. In next week’s, episode you will see Cynthia sitting as far away from Marlo as possible. She’s so much smarter and more likable away from Peter.
I don’t believe Marlo’s behavior. No, I mean, I seriously do not believe it. They MUST have paid her for each obnoxious act. I honestly do not believe anyone is that obnoxious. It’s a good thing they had a crew with them because she would have been jumped on the way out of club Jade. You don’t go out in a foreign country (or anywhere for that matter) and get wasted and then pull out wads of cash and toss it into the air unless you are at the Pink Pony. Especially as a female. All of that designer name dropping like Pam from RHOBH does has to be a script from Bravo. You could not pay me enough to humiliate myself like that in a foreign country. Wearing pumps on a Safari? Asking for hair and make-up? Asking for someone to carry you to the Jeep? I don’t believe that is real.
I like how the cashier told them that there are a lot of other people who would benefit from their purchases besides the orphanage. Shamwari takes all of the tourists to that orphanage. Also, did you notice that they had to get up early in the morning and the drive was only fifteen minutes but there was a spontaneous mob of singing school children who just so happened to be out for a lunch break? This is classic “singing for our supper” orphan tourism. Those kids on the side of the road did well being in the right place at the right time. I hope that village has a supplier who comes soon to restock! The ladies spent some money!
I must give Marlo credit on the orphanage visit though. She went right down to the kids eye level immediately and loved all over them. I think coming from the foster care system even she got that it was not the place to show out, though she did wear Louboutins. Nene seemed the most taken aback by what she saw at the orphanage. She seemed to be having an epiphany about how blessed her life has been, even with her trials and tribulations. Perhaps, that was a life changing moment for her because she sure seems like a different person lately. All in all I was very impressed by how they handled the entire orphanage outing. Each one of the housewives seemed genuinely touched and it was beautifully filmed. I can’t wait to see what the ladies get into next week!

I’ve been getting some questions about Shamwari Game Reserve where the housewives and convicted felon will be going on safari. Shamwari is a game reserve, which means it is about 60,000 acres of land enclosed by electrical fencing rather than an actual wild environment like one might find on a safari in other countries, like Kenya. Though some refer to it as “safari lite”, the animals are live, plentiful and certainly in no way domesticated. There are seven lodges to choose from on the vast property. It is my guess that Bravo put the ladies in Bayethe Lodge. It is the most expensive with prices in 2011 well over $1,000 per night. It is also the only TENT Lodge. The video above narrated by some guy who had clearly been drinking some liquid courage before retiring, will show you that while the tent has wooden floors, plumbing and electricity, there are portions of walls that are in fact canvas. The good news is that it seems that Bravo took up the entire lounge for the shooting. Click through the jump for more details
|Cynthia is actually our best hope
for knowing how to behave on the trip
Cynthia seems to have a good attitude about the trip. She gets that the whole point of going to other countries is to experience new things and other cultures. She is also probably the only one who has been outside the southeast before appearing on the show.
Phaedra who was instructed to refer to Marlo as a socialite by Bravo earlier in the season, now seems to be saying she doesn’t even know Marlo now that her violent offender record has been made public. I hope she hires lots of nannies to take care of that baby. Nary a mention of her BFF the Vice President of Ghana.
