John Mellencamp Celebrates Woodie Guthrie; Prepares to Premiere Ghost Brothers

Photo Credit: Mike Coppola Getty Images

John Mellencamp and presumably Meg Ryan have left Atlanta briefly this weekend to head to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mellencamp will co-headline the This Land is Your Land Tribute Concert  with Arlo Guthrie tonight in a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Woody Guthrie’s birth. The show is part of a year long global celebration of the life of Woody Guthrie. The Brady Theater hosts the event which also features The Del McCoury Band with Tim O’Brien, Rosanne Cash,The Flaming Lips, Hanson, Jimmy LaFave and Old Crow Medicine Show. The series of concerts will continue throughout the year and will include concerts in Austria and Germany as well as numerous U.S. venues.

Here in Atlanta, many of the performers in Mellencamp’s upcoming musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County are performing around town and  I have the tea on where you can catch a show and meet the performers in an intimate setting.

Mellencamp is in the final stages of preparing for the upcoming world premiere of his musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County at the Alliance in April. Meanwhile Eddie’s Attic has partnered with the Alliance to host a series of Tuesday Night concerts showcasing actors and musicians from the musical featuring musicians from the Atlanta area as well as national performers. The live performances are meant to showcase the original works of each artist rather than their roles in Ghost Brothers; however, you never know what the artists will come up with during the performance. Showtime is 8 p.m.

This Tuesday, March 13th Eddie’s Attic welcomes Justin Guarini to the stage. Justin is best known as the first runner-up on season one of American Idol but has appeared on Broadway in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and recently played Will in American Idiot the Musical. Joining Justin will be Kate Ferber, Peter Albrink  and Lucas Kavner.  March 20th performers include Dale Watson, Travis Smith ,Dave Onorato and Joe Knezevich, Ryan Wotherspoon, and Rob Lawhon and Kylie Brown and John Driskell Hopkins from Zac Brown Band. The final night on March 27th  will feature performances by Russell Cook and Cameron Cook (aka Little Country Giants), and Stephanie Laubscher w/ Josh Fletcher.

Opening night for Ghost Brothers of Darkland County is April 4th.

Meet The Cast, Check out the Preview for Shahs of Sunset

Hmm, It looks like the embed code isn’t up and working yet. You can use this link to view the video at Bravo.  Edited: Embem code fixed.

The press release for Shahs of Sunset just came out. Be sure to read here and here to find out about all the drama surrounding the taping of the show.  Based on those posts, it would seem that the only thing new about this Bravo “docu-series” is the ethnicity of the cast.  It looks like it may be more Iranian Jersey Shore than Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. So peep the video, and read about the cast and tell me what you think about the whole concept.

The show premieres, March 11 at 10pm which is a Sunday night. (Thanks Pam for asking)

Mercedes “MJ” Javid
MJ is a 30-something year old, luxury real estate agent living in the Hollywood Hills. A known party girl, she sometimes struggles balancing her “networking” at night with her early mornings at the office. Coming from different sides of the spectrum MJ and her overbearing and unconventional Persian mother, Vida, fight over everything including the way MJ dresses. MJ struggles to find out who she really is and what she really wants from her friends, from her work, and from her family.
Reza Farahan
Born in Tehran, Iran, and raised in Beverly Hills, Reza is a 38 year old prominent player in the Los Angeles real estate world. He is one of few openly gay Persians in the community and often struggles with gossip and prejudice regarding his sexuality. Reza’s family supports him in spite of the pressure they feel to ostracize him. Despite his untraditional style, Reza is an old fashioned guy at heart who wants a partner, a family, and the American White Picket Fence happy ending, but he is going to have to get past the baggage he carries from his upbringing to achieve it.
A$a Rahmati
A$a is a controversial singer/artist who prides herself on living the “Modern Persian gypsy bohemian lifestyle” and is prominent in the Venice artist scene. A refugee who fled Iran as a young girl A$a grew up in Europe before moving to Los Angeles as a teenager. The sassy 35 year old is often considered an outsider in the group doing whatever she wants, whenever she wants including dating outside her race and religion. With little desire to settle down any time soon, A$a’s main priority in life is staying true to herself and her career.
Sammy Younai
Sammy is a residential developer in Beverly Hills specializing in building multi-million dollar homes specifically for the Persian community. Constantly working to make a deal, Sammy feels the pressure from his family and culture to be wildly successful in his career. The 35 year old is a “ladies man” and is always on the prowl for his next fling, but recently began debating if it’s time to find the right Persian girl who appreciates what’s in his heart and not in his wallet.
Mike Shouhed
Mike is part of the self-appointed “Persian Real Estate Mafia” in Los Angles. After being a high roller in the Vegas commercial real estate market, Mike lost his shirt in the crash and has moved back home to rebuild. The 33 year old reformed player has the best of intentions, but old habits are hard to break and Mike can’t seem to stop charming every girl in the room. His friends joke he’s looking for “the one” every night at the club, but ultimately he is looking for a woman he can bring home to his mother.
Golnesa “GG” Gharachedadhi
GG is an exotic beauty with a fiery temper and very little filter. Fully supported by her father, this classic “Persian Princess,” goes out to lunch with her friends during the day and shops for Mr. Persian Right at night. More than ready to start a family, GG is definitely looking to settle down, but the 29 year old is having a hard time finding a man that can support the lavish lifestyle and handle her unapologetic personality.

Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp at the Palm

SPOTTED: Hollywood couple, Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp grabbing some dinner at The Palm tonight. The two are working on sound track for Mellencamp’s  Ghost Brothers of Darkland County a “riveting Southern gothic musical” based on the 1957 deaths of two brothers and a young girl that is slated to kick-off in Atlanta April 4, 2012 and run through May 14th.
Frequent Mellancamp collaborator T. Bone Burnett is involved in the project as its musical director and has recorded the songs for a soundtrack album that is slated to hit stores before the show opens in Atlanta. The CD version will include the full musical presented as a radio play with sound effects and voice acting by Elvis Costello, Meg Ryan, Kris Kristofferson and Matthew McConaughey. Kristsofferson, Costello, Neko Caseand, Taj Mahal have already recorded songs for the soundtrack disc.
Looks like love is still in the air for these two? Thoughts? Leave me a comment!
