This Land is Your Land: A Woody Guthrie Centennial Concert
in Tulsa, Oklahoma was by all accounts a rousing success last night. Most interesting perhaps was the unusual combinations of artist’s singing together. Jackson Browne’s pairing with The Flaming Lips to sing Along in the Sun and the Rain
and Arlo Guthrie and Hanson teaming up on Going Down the Road Feeling Bad
stand out as two unexpected pairing that were well received by the sold out crowd.
Mellencamp played Guthrie’s This Train in Bound for Glory and Do-Re-Mi before introducing his smash hit Pink Houses by saying he flat out stole the song from Woody. Toward the end of the concert, Mellencamp and Arlo Guthrie joined up to sing Oklahoma Hills before a sort of all in sing-a-long occurred with everyone singing This Land is Your Land at the end.
The primary source for this story is Jennifer Chancellor who has the intimidating title of WORLD SCENE WRITER and whose copyright info is for World Publishing Co. which is all sorts of MediaFakeOutish to me. I’m sorta worried she is going to go all Oklahoma on my ass just for glancing at her story. That said, it’s a really good first person account of the story if you are interested . Go read it here at tulsaworld.com and be sure to click the link there for the photos.

John Mellencamp and presumably Meg Ryan have left Atlanta briefly this weekend to head to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mellencamp will co-headline the This Land is Your Land Tribute Concert with Arlo Guthrie tonight in a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Woody Guthrie’s birth. The show is part of a year long global celebration of the life of Woody Guthrie. The Brady Theater hosts the event which also features The Del McCoury Band with Tim O’Brien, Rosanne Cash,The Flaming Lips, Hanson, Jimmy LaFave and Old Crow Medicine Show. The series of concerts will continue throughout the year and will include concerts in Austria and Germany as well as numerous U.S. venues.
Here in Atlanta, many of the performers in Mellencamp’s upcoming musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County are performing around town and I have the tea on where you can catch a show and meet the performers in an intimate setting.

Mellencamp is in the final stages of preparing for the upcoming world premiere of his musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County
at the Alliance in April. Meanwhile Eddie’s Attic
has partnered with the Alliance to host a series of Tuesday Night concerts showcasing actors and musicians from the musical featuring musicians from the Atlanta area as well as national performers. The live performances are meant to showcase the original works of each artist rather than their roles in Ghost Brothers; however, you never know what the artists will come up with during the performance. Showtime is 8 p.m.
This Tuesday, March 13th Eddie’s Attic welcomes Justin Guarini to the stage. Justin is best known as the first runner-up on season one of American Idol but has appeared on Broadway in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and recently played Will in American Idiot the Musical. Joining Justin will be Kate Ferber, Peter Albrink and Lucas Kavner. March 20th performers include Dale Watson, Travis Smith ,Dave Onorato and Joe Knezevich, Ryan Wotherspoon, and Rob Lawhon and Kylie Brown and John Driskell Hopkins from Zac Brown Band. The final night on March 27th will feature performances by Russell Cook and Cameron Cook (aka Little Country Giants), and Stephanie Laubscher w/ Josh Fletcher.
Opening night for Ghost Brothers of Darkland County is April 4th.
Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp are back in Atlanta to prepare for Ghost Brothers of Darkland County. The two were spotted having dinner at Tin Lizzy’s Midtown after a long day at the nearby Alliance Theatre. Darkland County is a musical written by Stephen King with music by Mellencamp. It makes its world premiere at the Alliance in April. The pair was last in Atlanta in December for a two week actor’s workshop with the cast. Production and Rehearsals are underway in preparation for opening night.
Meg Ryan and John Cougar Mellencamp are still being sighted all over midtown Atlanta this week. The couple is in town for a two week long developmental workshop with the cast of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County. The musical, which will premiere at the Alliance Theatre in April was written by Stephen King and features the music of Mellencamp.
It’s the story of two teen-aged brothers who get drunk at a dance, end up taking a girl to a cabin, where they drink even more and have an accident with gun which leads to a fatal car accident.
The actors workshop will be finishing up this week so you can be on the lookout for the other actors this week as well. Tony Award-winning actor Shuler Hensley (“Oklahoma!,” “Young Frankenstein” and “Tarzan”) and Tony nominee Emily Skinner (“Billy Elliott: The Musical,” “The Full Monty” and “Side Show”) are the leads in the show. The cast includes blues musician and film actor Jake La Botz; Broadway star and recording artist Justin Guarini (“Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” “American Idiot” and first runner-up in the first season of “American Idol”); actor and writer Lucas Kavner; actor and songwriter Kate Ferber (“One Child Born: The Music of Laura Nyro”); stage and screen actor Christopher Morgan; and country music singer Dale Watson. Other cast members include Peter Albrink, Kylie Brown, Lori Beth Edgeman, Gwen Hughes, Joe Jung, Joe Knezevich, Rob Lawhon, Royce Mann, and Travis Smith.

SPOTTED: Hollywood couple, Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp grabbing some dinner at The Palm
tonight. The two are working on sound track for Mellencamp’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County
a “riveting Southern gothic musical” based on the 1957 deaths of two brothers and a young girl that is slated to kick-off in Atlanta April 4, 2012 and run through May 14th.
Frequent Mellancamp collaborator T. Bone Burnett is involved in the project as its musical director and has recorded the songs for a soundtrack album that is slated to hit stores before the show opens in Atlanta. The CD version will include the full musical presented as a radio play with sound effects and voice acting by Elvis Costello, Meg Ryan, Kris Kristofferson and Matthew McConaughey. Kristsofferson, Costello, Neko Caseand, Taj Mahal have already recorded songs for the soundtrack disc.
Looks like love is still in the air for these two? Thoughts? Leave me a comment!
