Real Housewives of Atlanta is filming season ten, and it is starting to give me flashbacks of season eight production. Traditionally, RHOA has begun filming right after the fourth of July. That worked just fine until season eight, when Carlos King left and they brought in a new showrunner. The RHOA were not happy at all with his plans for their story lines and Bravo wasn’t thrilled with his casting choices. That was the season with Tammy McCall-Browning and the new show runner was pushing for her to get a peach pretty hard. That ended up to be a terrible casting choice that resulted in most of the footage from July and half of August being unusable. There were also legal issues from the Miami trip with Tammy. They ended up letting that guy go and bringing Carlos back and basically starting over. This resulted in a financial loss for production and the housewives because they lost three episodes that season airing only 17 instead of the usual 20.
As it turns out, Carlos may be pretty damn close to irreplaceable. Or at least that is how it is starting to look to me. They have an entirely new crew this year. It’s not just the showrunner who is new, the production manager, the camera operators, field producers, associate producers, pretty much everyone is brand new to RHOA. Carlos’ alleged firing over the Phaedra story line fiasco of season nine wasn’t the only issue that needed to be handed with production. The filming fiasco that was Sheree Whitfield’s housewarming, and to a lessor degree Kenya’s housewarming, resulted in fines for production and negative press. The newly formed production company merger that resulted in Truly Original seems to want to overhaul RHOA and take it “in a new direction.” Whatever that means.
So on June 5th production rolled into town to settle in and let all the new folks start to mesh with each other. Very little filming was scheduled for June. Kenya had the Vagina Monologues events that just happened, Cynthia had an event in NYC and a filming in LA for an upcoming edition of Family Feud, Porsha had a birthday trip planned, Shamea is busy with her wedding. And Nene only very recently reached a deal for her contract. The most interesting thing for me is that the new showrunner recently took off to Mykonos for his big 30th birthday celebration! That timing seems ridiculous to me. It’s a pretty immature thing to do and it makes me wonder if he can handle all the responsibilities he is undertaking.
So far the only large scene that has filmed has been Shamea’s bridal shower. That filming included only Shamea, Kandi, Porsha and Sheree. The next thing to film was Cynthia at her agency preparing for her recent modeling expo and talking about her Camp Bailey for Girls project. And then on Friday, Nene did her first taping with Cynthia at the Venetian Nail Spa. I doubt any of these scenes make it to air. Shamea is supposed to have a larger role this season. Whether or not that means a peach will remain to be seen until after we are well into filming.
Can we talk about what Cynthia and Nene wore to get their nails done? I think that dress that Cynthia is wearing is beautiful, and it may be what she worn to film Family Feud. But holy Coco Chanel! with the camo hat, the big earrings and the Cynthia Bailey Eyeglasses? Take of an accessory or two darling. And while the Chuck with the dress is something I would totally do, it is so not what we expect from Cynthia Bailey! I presume she did not come for a pedicure.
I think what makes her look less bohemian chic and more homeless chic is well, Nene. You guys are always attacking people like Ramona for not dressing her age. When y’all do that I always think it is ridiculous. Ramona looked fantastic on WHHL and people were dogging her for having long hair at 60! I say where what you want to wear as long as it looks good on you! And now, I am about to be a hypocrite. Sort of. Nene and her dingy white t-shirt and ripped up jeans is not age appropriate and does not look good on her. I’d overlook it if it wasn’t her daily uniform. Tossing a robe of some sort on top doesn’t elevate the look. The head scarf, and the tiny purse that looks like something a ten year old might carry is just confusing. When you put all of that next to Cynthia’s look it just comes off as Mrs. Roper meets Pippi Longstocking. And what is going on with Cynthia’s butt in these photos?
The delays with Nene’s contract are part of the retarded filming in June. Until they were sure who would be taking Phaedra’s slot, the direction of the story line was uncertain. So essentially, filming isn’t really going to be underway until after the 4th of July holiday. What will probably happen is that since Truly Original took over production of Kandi’s four-part Xscape special they can use footage from that and coordinate the schedules to ensure a full 20 episode season. Maybe.
I’m trying to stay unplugged for the most part this weekend for a mini-staycation. For some reason my DVR has decided to record all the old episodes of Iyanla fix my life, and last night I watched Sheree’s meltdown on the show. Iyana told Sheree she was a bitter, angry woman over and over again and I thought Sheree’s head might explode. The stories that she and Bob told there were very different from the ones they told on RHOA last season. Both of them were lying. Iyanla was right of course, and as predicted Kaleigh has graduated from highschool and both of her kids are in college without ever spending a night in the Chateau. I just can’t imagine why she is being kept for season ten or what her fake storyline will be this season.
As for Phaedra, she has NOT filmed anything for RHOA. I believe the reason that her neighbors thought she was filming was probably regarding Little Star, Big Star. Or some other engagement she has arranged for herself. Whenever Phaedra does anything for cameras of any kind the cul-de-sac fills with trucks of spanks and spackle. I think the neighbors just assumed it was RHOA. None of my filming spies have seen her nor do they have any expectation to see her.
I did hear she is still emailing Andy Cohen. I’ve noticed this odd uptick of Phaedra fans posting in earnest as if they are being paid, like a kashcow, to try to rehabilitate her reputation. It ain’t working.
To me it looks like the complete transformation of entire production crew is a potential for disaster. That said, it could also be the beginning of a fresh new look for the show. Sometimes change is good. But is this too much change? What do y’all think?
