Its’ week two of The Voice, and HALLELUJAH the bios of the talent aren’t all sob stories! Some are actually more about their paths as musicians! I’m grateful as I thought I was going to have to fast forward. I can’t hear too many sob stories on a show I watch for fun.
This week it doesn’t feel like there were many four or even three chair turns. The show was still enjoyable though, as there were some solid performances and even more excellent song choices. (Seriously, I wanted to love and mention the girl who picked a Carole King song, but like Alicia, I would have mouthed the words but not hit my button. Why don’t more people pick Carole King songs? Why hasn’t Carole appeared on The Voice?)
Troy Ramey: Sea Cliff, New York Song: Wild World
Chair turns: ALL FOUR Team: Gwen
Troy comes from a musical family. His dad has passed, but it wasn’t really a sad sad schmaltzy story. (They showed a musical skit of Troy, a sibling, and his Dad, from the high school that his dad taught at that was adorable). He inherited his Dad’s guitars, and started playing. I loved his line “I’m 32 years old, and I’ve finally realized this is exactly who I am and I need The Voice to tell as many people as I can that”. What he ISN’T is talentless. He performed Cat Stevens’ Wild World – but he really added a light grit to it that I loved, but maintained some purity. Obviously the coaches agreed as they all turned. He picked Team Gwen, even though he had his mom come out so she could give Blake a hug. (Mom was definitely a little twitterpated!)
Kawan DeBose: Miami, Florida Song: Lets Get It On
Chair turns: Adam, Gwen, Blake Team: Adam
I get the feeling that this man is just joyful. There is a kid like quality to him, in a very good way, even though he is 30. He was FUN to watch on stage, even though he wasn’t dancing around a lot (something you DON’T want to do when auditioning on The Voice in case it makes you breathless). His range was VERY good, and he was so comfortable on stage both when singing and talking to the coaches. Once Adam compared his range to Prince – I knew he was going to be Team Adam. From Adam, that is serious! Alicia didn’t turn, but she pitched for him to go to Adam. Then Kawan mentions that he’s “rocked with this dude since songs about Jag”, and even names M5 keyboardist by name.
Lauren Judd: Draper, Utah Song: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Chair turns: Gwen, Alicia, Blake Team: Alicia
Lauren reminded me a little of Darby Walker last season (girl with the hat), but not so alternative (which I think Darby went over the top with too many times). It was a different arrangement that totally worked. Of course it did. Cyndi’s songs usually are flexible like that! For 16, this girl has some vocal talents you don’t usually hear. Before she turned, Alicia even thought that it could be a duo. Sometimes you hear a duo being thought of as one person, but not usually one person who has a flexibility in tone. I can’t wait to hear what Alicia picks for her to sing.
Jack Cassidy: OF COURSE, I’m going to mention Shirley Jones’ grandson! I thought he had graduated from college when he talked about his ministries, and his experiences. He’s only 18! They only mentioned his grandmother in reference to the Partridge Family, and I’m not sure Gwen even recognized that. Um, bow down bitches! Shirley Jones is an OSCAR WINNER and was the powerhouse voice in such musicals as Oklahoma! And The Music Man! I do wonder how young, religious Jack feels about being named after his closet bisexual, philandering grandfather.
Note from TT: He said that David Cassidy and Shaun Cassidy are his uncles. I’d going to need a David Cassidy family tree and I wonder why the fine Christian people are not reaching out to David.
Taylor Alexander: He only got one turn (Adam) but I love this guy for his song choice. This guy is so old school country looking, I thought I was looking at a Hank Williams, Sr. impersonator! (Seriously, he looks more like Senior than Junior does) But his song choice was totally a surprise. He took one of the most cliched and iconic Cher songs, Believe, and made it country. I thought Adam was going to totally lose his shit.
Johnny Gates: Ok, part of me just loved this guy’s Italian American family. His dad mentioned needing to put more amps in the basement because the band practiced and their house, and the mom bragged how they were nice boys, and it was great music. Johnny and his band toured with one of my faves, Rod Stewart in 2015. The reason why he wasn’t in my top? He was a little TOO like Rod. I probably would have turned, but he definitely has to prove himself with the next one before I’m committed to rooting him on.
COACHES AND GOSSIP
I forgot to mention the outfits last week! I’m already sick of Gwen’s outfit. Its a glitter short shirt with fringe – and I think it is more suited for performances or the finale, NOT auditions! Maybe I don’t like fringe, because last season Alicia had it down one sleeve and it drove me nuts. This season Alicia is wearing a loose jumpsuit (not the British kind) with a long jacket in totally mismatched fabrics that totally work. Of course something not us regular folk could get away with, but I like it. Despite Blake’s constant mocking of it, I totally want Adam’s striped cardigan. With or without Adam. Blake continues to wear his dimples well.
Gwen continues to annoy me. I swear, at every turn when she saw how young the person is, she was “WHAAAAT? YOU’RE ___? That’s crazy!” She then would talk about how SHE started out that young, and performed with all boys. Oh, I might lose my shit if she gives “I have a lot to learn from you” as a pitch ONE. MORE. TIME. Worst pitch ever, followed closely with the aforementioned “With me, it’s two for one because I’m screwing Blake Shelton!”
The real scuttlebut that hit my newsfeed was that the ratings, while very good, declined from Monday to Thursday last week. Couple that with a LOT of Twitter buzz that Gwen and Blake’s relationship taking over the show, and I have a feeling there might be some re-editing of upcoming shows. While there was some talk, Gwen didn’t go and sit on Blake’s lap multiple times. (Did anyone catch how Alicia went over and sat on his other side last week? Is there a female version of cock-blocking?) There was this moment at the end of Tuesday’s episode where the four were hanging around Blake and Alicia’s chairs. Gwen, Blake, and Adam were joking about french kisses. Alicia was politely smiling, but then about the end, she went into non-smiling poker face. That and how Adam and Alicia root for each other (when they themselves have not turned). OK, I am willing to admit, after watching Alicia on the Today Show from this morning, that she is friends or “friendly” with Gwen… but sometimes your friends can annoy the shit out of you when they have a new boyfriend.
