Queen Sugar on OWN: Marathon of First Half Of Season Running Now

If you are looking for a really great series, I’ve been watching Queen Sugar on OWN.  It is halfway through the season but there is a marathon running that started at 4 p.m. EST today. It’s really great.  It’s about some squabbling siblings all with a heap of problems of their own who find themselves in a situation where they have to farm a season of sugar cane in Louisiana.

The characters are all rich and complex with their own story line. If you have ever read a book where just when you are totally enthralled in one person’s story, a new chapter starts with someone equally fascinating and you have to keep going back and forth.  Every has plenty of flaws as well as a lot of good qualities. The siblings are not used to being together and there are lots of power struggles happen as they work together to get the crop planted.

I have a whole lot more to say, but I want to get this up quickly since the marathon is on now. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

It’s on OWN.  Enjoy!

So weird that you wrote about this show, I literally was JUST thinking about it. My friend who I used to work with is in it. His nickname is Tree but, for acting he goes by Timon Kyle. He’s awesome. So funny and gorgeous inside and out. I’ve been meaning to watch. So glad to see the good review!

I saw the preview and wanted to watch but missed the first episode. Now that I know it’s good I’m going to catch up on it.

I don’t watch much OWN but have seen these commercials. The only other ads that seem to run for that network are the Tyler Perry shows. I watched in amazement a few episodes of his “Too Close To Home” on TLC. I cannot believe it ever made it to air. The pace was like watching paint dry and the acting is like watching really bad local theatre. So bad it was painfully funny. Even funnier, on demand TP and the producer have an after show in which they analyze the characters and storyline as if anyone could actually take it seriously. I’m always up for new quality shows and will give Sugar a try!

I love this show, very happy Oprah is bringing quality television to her network. Thanks for giving us more show’s to comment on, most of us are over Bravo’s shenanigans.

I wish I had OWN I would check this out. I am over Bravo. I’ve been watching the Voice, and This Is Us, both are great shows. I’ve also been watching Heartland on Netflix, which is corny, but makes me feel so happy.

Yes!! I love this show. You are right TT, it is like reading a book and getting wrapped up with 1 character then another. This has to be one of Tyler Perry’s best productions.

It’s not Tyler Perry’s. It is created, directed, and produced by the most excellent Ava DuVernay That is why it is so good!

I am soooo excited to see you post this!! I literally just posted about it on FB yesterday. It’s such a good show and the characters are amazing . That damn Ralph Angel is one sexy piece of African American man candy! 😅

  10. I am so glad you are recapping this show. I got pulled in after the first episode.
Quality storylines and good actors. Hope it continues as good as it has started.
Disappointed there are no new ones on tonight.
    Thanks again, Tamara!!!

As an Atlantan I am not a huge fan of Tyler Perry.

But this show is based on a book written by Natalie Baszile and all the major people working on the show including the director, Ava DuVernay are women.

And it shows. And WOMEN are supporting this show. It’s brilliant.

I cannot recommend this show enough.

  15. Tamara, Are you watching Westworld? I am really enjoying it so far.

I’m glad that you are writing this…it’s a really good show. Quality show indeed. Thanks.

Very very glad you wrote on this. Looking forward to watching it. Thanks!

  18. My cable company sucks! I deleted other recordings to make space & set my dvr to record the entire marathon. Was looking forward to binge today only to find black screen on every single episode. Then went to on demand & it wasn’t available. Called cable company & evidently even though it still shows OWN channel on the guide, it is no longer offered in my area. Serious bummer.

I haven’t watched this, but thanks for recapping it, I’m going to give it a try. I’m trying to get away from Bravo and the “reality” scene and I’m losing interest in Teen Mom and the likes… Time to go back to scripted TV. For years, the only scripted programing I watched was ABC Thursday night Shonda-land shows and those are still some of my favorites. I’ve just recently started watching 2 shows on HBO – Divorce – with Andy Cohens BFF Sarah Jessica Parker, and Insecure staring Issa Rae.

I watch the shows Greenleaf and Queen Sugar great acting. The little boy in Queen Sugar is good. I would not expect anything less from Oprah, she never does anything half way.
