One of the facts of the world of reality TV that I’ve had trouble getting some of you guys, particularly Teresa Giudice fans, is the relationship between the tabloids and the reality TV personalities. The frustrating argument always occurs over whether or not Teresa was paid for her interviews by In Touch. Each time I have explained here before that Teresa was under contract with In Touch, I receive a barrage of insulting comments, usually in broken English, from Tre huggers who tell me I am an idiot and that Teresa doesn’t have any control over what the tabloids say. They seem to fail to understand that reality personalities often enter into long-term contracts with major tabloids. Not only do they get paid for the exclusives they provide directly to the tabloid they partner with, they also have varying levels of control over what is published. For example, Kim Zolciak had a contract with Life & Style magazine for the exclusive rights to her wedding and the birth of her two sons. She has control over what is presented in that particular magazine and is paid for the stories. She has no control over what other tabloids post unless she enters into a contract with them.
Hopefully, this seemingly difficult concept for some of you has become more clear now that Joe Giudice admitted on RHONJ that Teresa was indeed paid for her In Touch articles. Teresa has had a long-standing contract with In Touch magazine. Click through for all the tea on Teresa’s contract and which three other housewives are currently under contract.
Teresa Giudice had a ten cover deal with In Touch over the past two years. He contract began in September of 2010 and ended in September of 2012. Here are the ten interviews she was paid for

- I Won’t Stay With a Cheater (August 2012)
- Teresa Talks Split (August 2012)
In addition to those ten paid covers, In Touch ran two other non-paid covers involving Teresa. In June of 2011 they ran a hypothetical story about her being pregnant with a boy. It had her on the cover with the misleading caption A Baby Boy for Teresa. It was a nonsensical article about what it would be like if Teresa had a boy. Also in the October 31, 2011 issue, Teresa was on the cover with Caroline and Jaqueline (photoshopped) with the Cover emblazoned with The Secrets That Could Destroy Them All. This was another non-paid cover which was coverage of last season’s finale episode.
I told you when the last interview with Teresa Giudice came up that her contract was over. That was the final cover of the ten cover deal. The last story barely had a single quote from Teresa. It seems as though she was done with the tabloid drama. Plus the national TV coverage of Joe on the phone with his lover seemed to really throw Teresa off her game. So unless both Teresa and In Touch come to another agreement, we may either see less of Teresa in the tabloids, or she will sign with another tabloid like Life & Style.
But wait, there is more tea. Last Thursday there was an In Touch Icons and Idols event. I was able to see a list posted on twitter of those who would be attending. This is a publicity stunt for all the minor celebrities who have a contract with In Touch. (Though of course they don’t say that.) This list was a list of people who are currently contracted with In Touch and likely requited to attend. I noted Teresa’s name was not on the list and intended to write about it and then more important stories came along. This was my final confirmation that Teresa’s contract had ended.
Nene at In Touch Idols and Icons Event September 6, 2012
Almost as important as Teresa’s name not being on the list, is the housewives whose names were on the list and therefore contracted with In Touch. They are Nene Leakes, Gretchen Rossi, and Vicki Gunvalson. Nene had a cover last month (Meet My Secret Grandaughter, August 2012) but neither Gretchen or Vicki have had a cover recently. Vicki used to be with Life & Style. I suppose we should be on the lookout for a cover from these two Orange County housewives soon. Or at least a couple of interviews. I’m guessing that Nene’s deal was for a one time cover. Nene is a hot commodity at the moment and has no reason to sign a contract for exclusive covers with anyone. Still all three housewives were at the Icons and Idols event last Thursday. And of course Gregg Leakes was trailing in Nene’s wake just as he always does.So there you have it. Teresa Giudice is OUT at In Touch and Nene, Gretchen and Vicki are IN. For now. Stay tuned for updates.

To me it is obvious Tre gets paid, and is clearly telling porkies when she is defending herself or not taking responsibility ” I have no control what is written’, does she actually think people are stupid.
I really like and admire you leaving in various comments on the site and not deleting them, especially who disagree with you. Also like your come back. I was banned from a Stoopid site for disagreeing with a conversation.

I come from a big family of argumentative people so I am used to heated debates. I don’t mind posting negative comments, I especially like the ones where the fine Christian ladies inform me of an eternity of hell and brimstone. 
The only posts I don’t post are off topic debates (Like the flood of nurses who want to descend and debate LPN v RN or the vacinne attorney who wanted to use this blog for a soapbox.) You can spout an off topic agrument ONCE and then we need to get back to whether or not a particular celeb is a role model or a moron. THAT I will argue all day.

Hi Tamara. First time poster here. Admittedly I am a Teresa fan, but I certainly don’t want to be labelled a Tre hugger. I find it offensive but hey that’s just me. It’s not like I take a reality show all that seriously anyways. I see the fights and name calling on twitter and FB and to be honest with you I couldn’t be bothered working myself up into a lather about it. There’s so many more things in life to be passionate about. The RH aren’t high up on my priority list of things to duel to the death over. ( figuratively speaking of course ) About the above commenter(s), all I can do is shake my head. It takes all kinds of crazy to come up with that stuff, (over and over again). Yikes!! Great site. I am guessing this site doesn’t trump the famewhorga site that gets the site link all over RHONJ blog forumn sites.
Trehugger adoration sites frown upon outing ALL of Teresa’s lies and contradictions. There is a reason beside the trehuggers jealousy claim that Teresa is alienated from her costars. Sad because half of them are her real family not the ones who live in her phone. I suppose the fan/family that live in her phone will do.

There are a LOT of idiots who like to defend Tre. I like Tre just fine, but I do think she is dumb as a box of hair and isn’t very logical in her own defense, and lies about stupid stuff. Why not just say “Hell yeah I get paid, and I’m not cheap!” I’d have a whole lot more respect for her.
On the other hand there are some lovely people who post here who are Tre Hugg…um who are fans of Tre.
And my comments to them are are meant as light hearted banter. It is just some chick with a really small frontal lobe on a reality show. Nothing to get all worked up about.

Tamara, thanks for the piece. You answered an e-mail from me once about how reality tv works, for a paper I was doing on the subject, and you were very informative, and even explained the whole Kim gets paid for her stories for Life & Style, as well.
Does Teresa get paid for her covers? Yes, why people would argue with basic logic, I don’t know. She has said it herself quite a few times. I just have one problem: I hate when people say I’m a Tre Hugger. I think it’s frustrating that every episode, everyone is against Teresa, and when you come to her defense, other posters, who are dubbed “sane”, because they don’t like her, attack her fans, like it’s a lot better when her fans do it in vice versa. The others on the show rarely get called out for their dirty deeds, including Melissa, Kathy, Jacqueline, and especially Caroline.
I don’t mean to be mean or write an essay, but it’s frustrating.
Never thought of myself as a Tre Hugger until last year’s reunion. What Mandy let happen was disgusting………to have all those hoes gang up on T was inexcusable. We know each and every one of those women have a dark side. She looks like Mother T after what Chuckie & Co. have done to her.

So, some of the most damaging material from In Touch that everyone was so upset about came in the 2 non-paid issues. Is that correct? I do remember Teresa saying she was paid for pictures. Most of the things they quoted were actually comments taken from the show if I recall. Correct me (I’m sure you will) if I am wrong.
The ten paid covers had interviews with Teresa in her own words. The two unpaid covers, one was just a regular old recap of the reunion and who said what with photos from Bravo. The other was a hypothetical about Teresa having a boy. I think it was mostly what she would do if she were pregnant. She gave no input to either of those stories. I remember Jaq bringing up the baby boy story. I didn’t read it so I don’t know if there was anything in there about the others. I think a lot of what Jaq was angry about were the ones about going to jail. I know that “Zio Joe” was mad that Teresa implied he would not help her if Joe went into the big house… For the most part it was quotes by Tre that pissed people off. There were no quotes in the two unpaid articles except for quotes directly from the reunion…

I am not sure if they were the most mad about what was said on the show or not. Probably a bit of both. A lot of the show comments were Tre denying selling stories which is sort of when the Great Tabloid Debate of 2011 began.

so does that mean Kim and the rest of the kardashian have a contract too… I seen them on way more magazine covers then tre. and can they legally say they have a contract; Im pretty sure they cant. on top of that Im pretty she cant control the title of the cover. Nothing was said badly about her castmates. she talked about mostly herself and her troubles. I really dont see why is this such a big issue. if she gettin paid to talk about herself well whats he problem. she trying getting out of debt. I just dont understand the big deal. this is just a bravo storyline that everybody is feeding into. is not that serious. Not a Tre fan; Im just using common sense, I just dont see this being a big deal.
The Kardashians have been know to pay certain places for a positive spin, such as TMZ and Mail Online rather than being paid. Although they do grant paid exclusives from time to time as well. The Kardashians have ten tons of free publicity and only deal with tabloids directly when they need to spin something that is potentially damaging to their brand in the long term. Being on a cover does not mean you were paid. But being on a cover with an exclusive interview (as opposed to those cover stories where the “facts” are from an unnamed source) does mean you are being paid. I don’t understand how so many people don’t understand how tabloids are run. They make their money from the advertisements and spend their money on exclusives to draw more readers.
